I always took note of Asimov and Clarke's public brush-offs of the phenomenon. They came across as scientists who wrote rather than science fiction writers. Forward thinkers with conservative attitudes, they were unable to conceive that their influence could have helped nudge the ufological and scientific communities closer together.
