UFO Conjectures

The novelty of UFOs (flying saucers) ended when (or maybe why)?

Copyright 2017, InterAmerica, Inc.
My interest in the UFO phenomenon waned when virtually all the reports of UFOs were about lights in the sky, sometime in the 1980s?

Who gives a damn about lights in the sky? They could be anything, mostly prosaic things.

In the heyday of flying saucers we had reports of tangible, nuts-and-bolts like objects in the sky and on the ground, often accompanied by odd entities, humanoid beings.

Today, we are inundated by reports of ephemeral, evanescent lights scooting overhead, rarely settling on the ground and certainly not debarking weird beings.

How can one get excited by that?

Somehow, like all things that begin novel, the phenomenon has dipped into a state of stasis and reportorial routine.

This explains why many of us UFO long-timers hark back to alleged sightings of old.

They had mysterious cachet.

Will UFOs have a resurgence or renaissance?  Not likely.

The phenomenon has dissipated, to the point of curious ennui by “ufologists” no matter how fervently they protest that this isn’t so.

I know that many who sneak by here hate that I keep bemoaning the state of ufology and UFOs here but it is endemic that we adhere to St. Paul’s dictum:

"When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." [1 Corinthians 13:11]

  • Oh for the good old days when UFOs were really UFOs.

There is a guy living a quarter of a mile from me who has "UFO" on his car number plate. He once told me he acquired it after hearing the late Sir Bernard Lovell, of Jodrell Bank fame, denounce all UFOs as nonsense. He still has the same number plate!

  • Richard, you're wrong to characterize the present-day UFO phenomenon as merely lights-in-the-sky: This is simply not true! Of the over 2600 reports MUFON has received of events that have occurred this year, for example, over 700 are cases where the object or objects were within 500 feet of the witness(es)--and I guarantee many of these are more than simple point sources of light in the night. It's unfair of you to make statements implying otherwise and without a nod to the current reality.

Of course we all know LITS predominant reports--they have since 1947! Nothing new there. And with more sightings being submitted than ever before, this is still true; fortunately, they're easy to brush aside. But every October I give a talk at a Maryland UFO conference where I focus only on recent cases of seemingly structured objects seen at close range, and (while admittedly landings and "weird beings" are rare, for some reason) I can assure you there's plenty of gold in them thar cases, enough to stir one's blood. However, for many researchers, I suppose it's more comfortable to "hark back to alleged sightings of old" with their "mysterious cachet."

  • Thanks Rob...

I'm just sour about the lack of humanoid sightings and metal-appearing craft.

  • Hi, Rich, sorry I´ve been absent (once again). I must admit I try to read your blog regurarily but I´m rather bad at leaving comments (and then I feel guilty...) But I read your blog and appreciate your efforts.
But the disappeared novelty of flying saucers...Hmm, although I´ve read your posts about this before, I actually just really started to think more this thing. I´m on my forties but my interest in UFOs is quite recent (when I was younger they seemed too silly, of course) so I haven´t thought the historical perspective too much. But now I did, I realise you´re right. Nowadays people see only lights or (at best) some suggestive shapes in the sky and nothing much more. It´s not just that everyone has cameras, (almost?) nobody claims to have witnessed UFO landing where they just couldn`t get any photos or anything like that. – Or there must be close sightings but without much evidence and basically, those close encounters seem to be interesting only for those who are already UFO buffs and nobody else gives a #%&!. The way the alien abductions have become a joke.
Even here in Finland (far away) in the seventies there were at least a couple of close encounters, one of them (I believe) got even a bit famous in the international UFO circles (I got to check that out, I only remember that the case was featured in the UFO (comic)magazine late seventies, I read the Finnish translation as a kid : )) But today UFOs won´t make the news and probably the only ones who believe in the real close encounters are the ones who believe in the channelings of the aliens.
(Actually, when I read the pages of the Finnish UFO Research Association (local, at least basically scientific investigators), it looks like the most passionate conversation is made on the ”paranormal” page, including all the channelings, prophecies and all the new age stuff….)
I´m too starting to wonder whatever happened some thirty-forty years ago?

  • RR, -and Rob,

A second try at reply here as Google password problem came up...

I also tired and gave up on the "lights in the night sky" as a second layer of unknowns beyond common daylight UFOs due the darkness not allowing a visual reference point/object not to mention possibilities of errors.

Having said that night time lights unknowns are still UFOs by definition and there is still a possibility that the same "lights" or the cause of the lights could be there in the daytime but unseen as the only way they can be seen is in darkness. Just thinking...

To Rob, - I'll also try to reorder my own frustrations.
