A 1972 UFO encounter, revitalized by Mysterious Universe in 2011.

Dr Dee offered, in a comment elsewhere here, a link to a Rob
Morphy Mysterious Universe story from July 5, 2011 about a smattering of
strange UFO episodes with teenagers in the Kera area of Kōchi City, Japan:
This is a photo of one of the young boys, holding the
miniature UFO noted in the story, that he and his buddies “played with" over a
short period of time.
(There are other photos of the UFO in the rather thorough
Morphy report.)
Dr Dee sees the encounter as interesting and perhaps likes
the idea that the object in play came through an inter-dimensionable glitch,
which is one of the speculations in the Morphy posting.
This is a UFO tale that didn’t get much play here in the
States but in Japan it came to light when a comic book [UFO Comics]
presented the account in 2004, which led to a kind of investigation in 2007.
Again, what can we make of such an account? It could be an
elaborate, intriguing hoax, as noted in the story, or a bona fide UFO
encounter of a unique kind.
Because of the photos, we have to rule out a delusional folie
a cinq.
And another, somewhat similar account in a different
Japanese prefecture four years later, adds substance to the 1972 episode(s).
At any rate, such UFO tales are sloughed off by ufologists
and enthusiasts but they provide grist to whatever UFOs are: intrusions from
elsewhere or concoctions of creative, imaginative minds, young and old alike.
Any input would be
appreciated.

Accepting the Japan Space Phenomena Society (JSPS) verdict (and father of one of the witnesses who was then the Director of the Center for Science Education in the city of Kōchi) that this was NOT an elaborate hoax we are left with more questions than answers here.
The obviously manufactured object (but by whom?) resembling 'cast iron' but of some much lighter and apparently unidentifiable metal, contained 'something resembling radio parts' (glimpsed through the underside pattern of holes) and bore Earthly 'elemental' symbols on the base - waves, (water) clouds (air) & a 'bird' (or similar flying object) and what appeared to be a 'budding flower' (earth). All of which curiously, have the Earthly 'natural world' as a theme.
Presumably then this is an object of earthly origin yet of peculiar, unidentifiable design and again exhibiting seemingly 'impossible' abilities such as flying without any apparent means of propulsion or aerodynamic lift.
I'm reminded of Jacques Vallee's comment that sightings of 'strange lights in the sky' before the age of powered flight were often referred to as 'fairy houses'.
However 'absurd' a suggestion this may seem to our 'rational' Scientific Age ears - I'm siding with Vallee, Keel et al on this - it's 'terrestrial technology' but of 'non-human' origin from what were once deemed 'The Fey'.
I would similarly stick my neck out & say the Finnish encounter was with a similar entity as was the 1954 'Cennina Landing' - although no one saw said object 'land' or 'lift-off' - illustrating our current cultural proclivity to shoehorn all such anomalous encounters into the 'extra-terrestrial visitors' & their 'spacecraft' category that earlier cultures would not. This despite none of the eye-witness testimony suggesting either conclusion.
The two small almost 'Hobbit' like humanoids encountered at Cenina appeared from behind the object and were never witnessed entering or leaving it. They were reputedly dressed in grey capes and caps, the accompanying object described as resembling a 'yarn bobbin' or spindle covered in 'stretched leather'- a particularly unsuitable design for interstellar space travel one would think. A local Police Chief out with a hunting party was later called to the scene and confirmed deep depressions in the ground indicated some 'heavy object' had rested there while two young farmhands tending to their pigs came forward claiming to have seen & heard witness Rosa Lotti conversing with the 'humanoids' though again neither saw said object in flight.
All three encounters seem on one level unbelievable & almost comically absurd, yet all three left tangible, physical evidence & effects in their wake. (It's also intriguing to note how many such encounters seem to take place in forests or woods - the liminal/transformative realm of most faery tales & home to strange creatures)
I'm more and more of the opinion, like Vallee, Keel etc. that such 'UFO' encounters are of paranormal/supernatural & Earthly origin & have more in common with the experiences recalled here:

than with anything supposedly 'extra-terrestrial'.
It's all 'weird shit' Rich & we're 'not meant to know.' :)

But why are we "not meant to know"?
It's a madness that is soaked with irrationality.
Who or what's the source of the madness?

If we knew that Rich - there'd be no mystery & no Ufology.
It is indeed seemingly 'irrational' madness, the apparently 'absurd' and non-sensical 'High Strangeness' encounters eventually proving the most fascinating for Hynek & Vallee.
'Who or what is the source of it all?' is THE key question in post ETH Ufology as Keel, Vallee, Hynek & others came to accept.
The 'Fey Folk' were noted for their michievousness & trickery, seeking to confound & confuse (and on occasion abduct) their human victims. They were often (though not always) small & 'humanoid' who performed 'impossible' feats and whose motives were always a mystery.
Similarly, the pronouncements & actions of many UFO occupants seem designed to puzzle & perplex rather than illuminate. They (& their vehicles) perform impossible feats (levitation, flight without wings or propulsion, passing through walls, vanishing in an instant etc, etc.)
One can't but note the similarities & inexplicable abilities seemingly re-tooled for the technological age that are always, as ever, just 'beyond' our comprehension & current capabilities (much like the miraculous 'airships' & their occupants' incomprehensible 'explanations' of their propulsion systems encountered a few years prior to their human invention.)
It remains endlessly fascinating yet perplexing. An intelligence it would seem, that exists alongside us but whose motives seem incomprehensible.
Weird Shit Happens.

I note the regular enthusiastic posters of various skeptical paradigms & theories to 'explain' UFO encounters won't touch this with a barge-pole. :D

Most likely, Dr Dee, because there's nothing much to say about some Japanese boys' prank and make-it-up silly miniature "flying saucer" story. It's so implausible.
If my five year old claims "there's a monster in the closet," must I consider it seriously? No. Same for most "UFO" stories, they're either too fantastic and have zero evidence or they're utterly inconsequential stories with crummy evidence.
Just because someone makes an extraordinary claim doesn't mean I'm obligated to consider it seriously. (I first said that in high school, fifty years ago.) It's called "good sense." I know the world as it is, andy have heard enough of these stories to recognize baloney when I see it. If only "UFO" believers had this gift.
ps. Jacques Vallee is nothing more than a charlatan, a "UFO" fraud. He's added absolutely nothing to the "UFO" subject, his observations are nonfalsifiable, non-scientific hogwash. He's a guy who's written over a dozen "UFO" books just to make money, period. He's another "UFO" conspiracy theorist, spinning a pseudoscientific yarn for money, the money to be made in the "UFO" business off of gullible believers.
