Friday night, November 2, 2018, TCM [Turner
Classic Movies] presented the 1964 movie, Fail Safe:
In the initial War Room scenes, when U.S. jets and a
commercial airliner went astray, the references by the military men to Early
Warning signs of those planes were “UFOs.”
About a dozen times, the cast called the straying images
“UFOs.”
What caused the screenwriter (and filmmakers) to use ‘UFOs”
so predominantly in the 1964 movie?
Not bogies? Or aircraft” Or blips? But UFOs….

Wonderful (and scary) movie. Henry Fonda delivers the best performance in his career. Should be seen by all of the 20 somethings who think that they know everything because they have a cell phone. As to the repeated mention of UFOs, the Dolan books provide several references to NORAD alerts based on UFO incursions back in the day. Doubt, however, that was common knowledge in 1964. More than likely the screenwriter was a UFO buff.

Sad, yes. The General Black (Dan O'Herlihy) "I am the matador" part especially at the end. The George Clooney live TV remake (2000) ignored that and any hint of "UFO" nomenclature.

Geez, I had forgotten about the Clooney TV presentation, Ron.
Everyone in the movie was superb, even Dom DeLuise, who usually did comedy bits.
The film was terrific all round, one of my all-time favorites.

UFO didn’t nor does it mean extraterrestrial craft or flying saucers per de. It simply refers to a craft observed flying that is unidentified. Many aircraft start out as UFOs and are subsequently identified. Don’t read more often into this.

No one is reading more into the UFO references in the movie. It just seemed strange that the epithet was used so often.
