History Channel's Project Blue Book – Program 4

Copyright 2019, InterAmerica, Inc.
The History Channel’s fourth program in its Project Blue Book series was ostensibly about the 1948 Chiles-Whitted sighting of a cigar-shaped UFO.

But the opening sequence depicting that event was shorn of anything about the sighting as we UFO people know it.

This paltry series descended into a swipe at Wernher von Braun, played by a shrimpy actor whereas von Braun was a strapping fellow.

There was an alien floating in a glass vat, purportedly there at the behest of or because of von Braun’s secret flying saucer work, and an Air Force pilot was forced to get into place in a saucer that disappeared when the disk fired up.
A pig-farmer was involved and Allen Hynek even found a crop circle on the pig-farmer's land, which was affected, apparently, by the Chiles-Whitted cigar-shaped "thing" flying over. The farmer's pigs were killed by the fly-over, and he (the farmer) was reimbursed by von Baun.

And the writers continue to imply a lesbian relationship between Mrs. Hynek and a fetching blonde “spy.”

The fourth show, like the series itself, was a joke, but when Kevin Randle corrects the Chiles-Whitted portrayal, Kevin still entertained by the series I’m guessing, some of his dopey followers, like Brian B, will write how much they were entertained by the dreck.

  • Actually, the russian lesbian subplot has me reconsidering my decision to stop watching after the first episode.

  • It's a tawdry element, Claude.

I'm surprised that Paul Hynek didn't protest the insinuation about his mother.

Paul is a consultant for the show.

  • I'll suggest a "tawdy element" would actually be a step up for this awful awful project.

  • It's just a TV show, Rich!

The so-called History channel has nothing to do with history. It's the A&E Network, a joint project of Hearst media and the Disney Corp. It's been called the Hitler channel, the Histrionic channel, the Hysterical channel, and the Ancient Aliens channel.

The program merely called "Project Blue Book" has little to do with the real Project Blue Book. It's simply a TV-show mashup of familiar "UFO" conspiracy themes and tropes that will eventually recreate the Grand Cosmic Conspiramyth of popular culture that includes ancient aliens, flying saucers, fantasy physics, gray aliens and the impossible worldwide conspiracy of the X-Files that we all know already.

And in a cast of mostly fictional characters, the fictionalized character of J Allen Hynek is not the "real" J Allen Hynek anymore than the rest are real. And apparently the representation is completely acceptable to the family of the real Hynek since one son is an advisor to the program and two other siblings have endorsed the characterization.

What the program shows is that the original stories are so thin and have such simple explanations that they must be incorporated into the whole popular "UFO" mythology of false beliefs and presented in this way to have any substance or appeal at all. A pilot and a weather balloon; some kids seeing a documented large meteor and maybe an owl or other large bird in the woods; and scattered reports of typical late-summer meteor showers over West Texas during a merely coincidental period of flying-saucer hysteria! That's not much to make a fantastic "UFO" program of without all the rest of historical "UFO" conspiracy mythology supporting them.

And this what you dislike about it: The program is one of the best examples so far of how all of ufoolery is merely a mass media created and perpetuated impossible conspiracy mythology and an UTTER FICTION!

It's all a fiction, my buddy, and that's all it has ever been.

    Love, you!
