That 1952 Oscar Linke sighting (now with little beings reported)

Copyright 2019, InterAmeric.a, Inc.

My dear pal Claude Falkstrom sent me a newspaper clipping of the 1952 Oscar Linke flying saucer sighting in East Germany, noted here recently.

What's interesting -- very interesting to me -- is that this account includes Mayor Linke's assertion that two little entities were seen outside the craft by him and his daughter. (There was no mention of this in the newspaper reports and news stories I've read or seen.)

  • Two beings observed; not uncommon. Relatively short beings; again, not uncommon. Some sort of a lamp or light on the chest; again, this has been reported in other alleged close encounters. Helmets, and hands and arms such that one being touches the helmet of the other. Sounds very "earthly" and not very alien. Observation from 30 feet or less; very close. And two observers (father and daughter). And as I observed in a prior post, the craft itself resembles no known air craft with those flight characteristics before or since (although similar crafts show up in other UFO reports).

Not many possible explanations here. A complete hoax...perhaps the Zoam solution. An alien spacecraft from a distant galaxy...not very probably to me. Some secret private technology (but why the helmets?). Obviously we need quite a bit more follow up on this encounter and, apparently, there was none.

  • Dominick:

I think we can rule out a hoax -- what would be the purpose?

And Mayor Linke seems unlikely to be a hoaxer.

The craft may not be from outer space but it could have been a Soviet prototype as I've long contended.

But no matter what, the "sighting" is way past the doorway to further investigation.

  • Not necessarily if the daughter is still alive and wants to talk...

  • She can re-iterate her account of the sighting, Dominick but can't take us into a more thorough understanding of what was seen, I'm sorry to say.

And we are dogged by the lateness of another recounting....the thing was seen in 1952, 67 years ago.

  • I'm sure that you are correct Rich BUT let me pursue this issue a bit. The original account that we read is based only on the observations of the father. Did the daughter see (or hear) something different and if so, what? The richness of most UFO accounts are almost totally dependent upon the questions asked by the reporter or interviewer. What were the questions? Were there answers by father and daughter that diverge significantly? Does she remember, for example, answers that her father provided that were not, of one reason or another, in the newspaper account? (Details held back to check authenticity?) Was she questioned separately and what happened to her answers? Were the authorities involved in any way? The daughter, even after all of these years, might have some unique (disturbing?) memories that might shed some light on our understanding of this complex phenomenon.

I am, of course, sensitive to the fact that old memories are unreliable. I get it. Yet if I saw what is claimed back in 1952, and if my account differs substantially from what my father reported, I might never forget the details and I might want to share them.

  • Again Dominick,

What would be called for is not a memory revival but a forensic study of the landing site, the craft (impossible), and other things (weather, aircraft in the area as the time, etc.).

Another recounting of the sighting by an old lady now, corrupted by all the notoriety of the original disclosure is not going to be productive.

  • I have to agree with Rich on this one (much as I enjoy Dominick's excellent contributions).

There's a very aggravating tendency for supposed eyewitnesses' anomaly reports to accrete into dramatic stories over years or decades, even if one only tracks the statements of a single alleged witness across time.

Two good examples here would be the Exeter incident and the 1966 "TNT area" "Mothman" sighting. In the former case, an odd sequence of lights in the night sky became a massive round object bearing those lights. In the latter case, an armless, winged creature with man-like legs and torso became, over the course of Linda Scarberry's retellings of her purported encounter, a winged humanoid with *arms* and legs, which was even clearly seen, so the (later) story goes, using its arms (and hands) to extricate one of its wings from a fence.

It may sometimes be true that these temporal variations in accounts are due to poor investigation and reporting of anomaly cases when they're first learned about (especially if they're first documented in newspapers). And for many possible reasons, some eyewitnesses may not offer all the details that they remember soon after an apparently anomalous event, divulging them only later. But often I suspect we're seeing the faultiness of human memory in action, which gives good reason to assign very little weight to testimonies concerning old occurrences.

  • There are some significant contradictions in Linke's recollections as reported here and there:

    - it took place in the evening // in the afternoon.

    - they were riding with the girl sitting in the sidecar // they were pushing the motorcycle because of a flat tire

    - The purpose of the trip : Linke was a senior official of the East German Farmers Association and was returning to his home from a meeting. // It was one of many such trips he took with his daughter in a scheme to prepare their escape into W. Germany.

Linke's story deserves its place in the dustbin of saucerological tall tales of the era.
