Hallucinations are “real” and UFO are too….but in what way?

As you know or will know when reading about hallucinations, what a person sees or hears is real to them a non-hallucinogenic event is to anyone said to be sensing reality normally.

Of course an hallucination is experienced by one or more persons who are participating in an abnormal state, momentarily.

If an hallucination extends for a period of time, the person(s) afflicted have entered a psychotic state, often only resolved by psychological (psychiatric) assistance.
The behavior of such persons so afflicted is said to be delusional and exists as a “minor” state of behavioral disorder or develops in a full out attack on the personality: schizophrenia.

In all instances, no matter how serious, hallucinations are real events, perceptions of a reality that normality doesn’t register.

Nonetheless, the hallucination is actual – real – by all definitions, much as a rainbow or fog is real: something amorphous but existent in real terms.
Because an hallucination takes place in one or a few persons – sometimes among a group, and termed within the mass hysteria labeling – the abnormality of it is certified. It lies outside reality as reality is perceived by normal sensory data or perception.

Now what if UFOs are hallucinations in that same sense, as that which are misperceptions of reality or, rather, perceptions of that which do exist but in a way that defies normality; that is, UFO witnesses – including those U.S. Naval pilots currently in then news and said to have encountered UFOs – who are having hallucinatory perceptions but of something that is cloaked as an hallucination only by reason of its natural or normal makeup.
I’m suggesting that UFOs are like rainbows: a perceived item without materiality, something devoid of constituent matter.

The reported accounts of UFOs (flying saucers early on) have almost always consisted of a ghost-like observation: unstructured tangibility, bizarre movements, instantaneous appearance and disappearance, no sound, no material viability.

As for traces on the ground, in situ, or radar returns, temperature inversions provide radar returns and poltergeists leave tangible visible traces.

UFOs may be of a nature that is non-material, consisting of an hallucinogenic-like perception that, while not being a true hallucination, is just as intangible yet real as that which some persons are bereaved to endure (or blessed to see or hear, as in the case of Saints or those Shamantic personages so beloved by some UFOers I know).
The nature – the essence of UFOs – may be something unknown by human standards of perception.

This should not imply an extraterrestrial determination but, rather, a phenomenon that should be considered as rare yet as real as any number of other things that impact human senses, many of those things mistakenly listed as mental aberrations.

  • Coincidentally, Rich, I've been reading Mary Rose Barrington's phenomenal book, _Talking about Psychical Research_, published in 2019. It's coincidental because, as I read yesterday in that book, she argues that the most dramatic displays of paranormal abilities, often by certain mediums, had the quality of imposing hallucinations or dream states on to physical environments. One is here reminded of JAC's many observations to the effect that close encounters seem to exhibit the character of dreams.

If this is a unifying aspect of paranormal experiences, the possibility that we tend to identify what is in fact a different mode of perception with dreams or hallucinatory states suggests itself, especially when the contents of the "hallucinations" are shared by healthy people.

Barrington is of the view that each person's mind has a role in maintaining the ordinary causal properties of their local environments, and that when the mind's typical engagement in this maintenance is altered, very odd things happen (causally "impossible" movements of objects, materializations out of thin air, speech from apparently disembodied voices, etc.).
