UFO Conjectures

I’m a full-out Saganite!

Copyright 2021, InterAmerica, Inc.
I’ve always enjoyed clips of Carl Sagan ruminating about astron- omy and assorted related topics, UFOs among them

(I have a few Sagan videos at my YouTube channel.)

Recently a few Sagan pieces came my way via notifications from YouTube, one per TVO and one from a Johnny Carson Tonight Show appearance.
In the TVO video, Sagan’s account of the Earth in the context of the Galaxy and Universe along with his view of “evolution” elsewhere in the Cosmos are views that I, apparently, adopted from him.

I’d insert both YouTube links here but know that a few of you fellows are disinclined to see the sense of Sagan’s observations, so the effort would be a waste.

The Carson segment(s) present further insights as to how Sagan thought and how he offered his views with an open mind and courteous demeanor. Even Johnny showed an intelligence that is often missing among UFOers, even a few who show up here.
I’m writing this as recent forays inside Facebook show that delusions and general madness among the great UFO unwashed there is running amok. (I think Ron may agree..)

The plunder of intelligence and insertion of blatant ignorance tells me that ufology is going into another Dark Age, sometimes lit along the way by UFO old-timers who should know better.

All that said, new assertions that are afoot revive Roswell, again, and the UFO/ET panoply is about to get more headlines via Luis Elizondo’s pending book and his recent podcasts and TV appear- ances all over the place.
The rush to some kind of suggested finality derives from the apparent feeling of terminations (deaths) by some well-known members of the UFO community.

I may list the names of those who think they are not long for this world and those who’ve been cited for a visit from the grim reaper because of their medical conditions offered up at FB for all to see and comment on.
(I’m feeling a little iffy myself.)

  • Just an aside on Sagan. For all his eloquence and contributions to science (and his book "Contact," which I think is excellent), there was also another side to him, such is the duality of man.

After Apollo 8 took the first voyage to the Moon in December 1968, Commander Frank Borman and his crew embarked on a post-flight publicity tour (standard procedure post-missions) across the globe. Borman was invited by Dr. Sagan to a talk with his students at Cornell University. This was during the time (1969) there was great unrest on college campuses because of Vietnam. Borman by then was used to a certain level of vitriol (but was a hard as nails military man and aviator), having appeared at several colleges previously. Since the talk was being hosted by Sagan in his home, Borman had brought his wife along with him (by invitation).

What followed was a verbal assault by the students directed at Borman personally for being an establishment and military member, fueled by a general disdain for money spent on Apollo rather than social programs. Sagan himself was not a supporter of the manned spaceflight program, thinking the money better spent on robotic probes (programs he had skin in).

Borman was shocked by the venom spewed that night, and angered since his wife was caught in the crossfire, while Sagan looked on and refused to intervene. Borman later wrote in his biography about the "set-up" orchestrated by Sagan. I take his word for it.

So any admiration for Sagan I may have is tempered by this incident.

As for Facebook, I do agree, Rich. The desperation I read in the words comes from both researchers and believers, but even more so by skeptics. Ufology breaks hearts.

  • I know, Ron, that Sagan was not a perfect man, but how views on the Cosmos are mine pretty much.

He was punished for his "bad" behavior apparently, taken from us earlier than seems normal. God bless him.

I'm finding the skeptics chastened quite a bit, thankfully.

But some people I like and who have up to now been UFO sensible are acting and spewing nutty stuff lately, as you know.

Ufology does break hearts, and minds too.
