The Rendlesham Mess

Copyright 2023, InterAmerica, Inc.
Just a short note, again, about Jim Easton’s recapitulation (via Facebook) of the 1980 Rendlesham event.

Easton is comparing original accounts by Penniston, Burroughs, and Halt with what those men are saying today, and Easton is pushing forward original materials and how the whole episode has “evolved” – I say devolved – into what it is currently.

Unfortunately, as has been the case with almost all highly publicized UFO sightings, there are those who will defend the most egregious nonsense put forward, blatantly, to capitalize on the thing – capitalized economically (books, appearances, etc.) or capitalize egocentrically (moments of public attention; the Warholian few minutes of “fame”).

Jim Easton’s goal is – as I’m reading it – to set the record straight. But I dislike even the modicum of attention that the carnivalistic episode continues to get.

Rendlesham, like Roswell and a few other irregular but “explain- able” iconic UFO tales, should have been swept under the ufological rug long ago.

But, unfortunately, a few die-hard UFO enthusiasts insist upon indulging in the fantasy rather than accept the obvious truth of the matter(s): some UFO sightings are fairy tales instigated by the slightly warped, almost harmless needs of “witnesses” for a moment in the sun.

  • Rich, does Nick Pope endorse a UFO component regarding Rendlesham?

  • It's hard to say.

Nick is smart. Plays the middle, doesn't commit to iffy elements in anything UFO oriented.

No sensible person would endorse a UFO incident as the source for the Rendlesham mess.

    Not at this point anyway.

  • Dear Mr. Reynolds (Rich): Of course, Rendlesham Forest is a UFO event -- all the way from 1980 to the present. The fact that you and others may deny this case has no bearing on the truth of the matter. JS

  • John...

Whether the episode is credible (real) or not is a matter of dispute by some of us.

Regardless, the incident has now mushroomed into a mess -- a conglomeration of fact and fantasy and the fellows involved no longer credible.

    Sorry.

You may find Rendlesham to be important but some of us long longer do.

  • Sorry, but no. While the infighting among the principal witnesses (Halt, Penniston, and Burroughs) is quite regrettable, I vigorously dispute that "the incident[s] ha[ve] now mushroomed into a mess -- a 'conglomeration' of fact and fantasy ...."

There is no such conglomeration of fact and fantasy, and the matter can be sorted out. Nor are the fellows involved no longer credible [Larry Warren excepted].

Rather, what is going on with the incredibly significant and important case of Rendlesham Forest -- as with the case of Roswell -- is that you deniers find yourself at such a loss for any credible, non-UFO explanation, that your only resort is to a pathetically weak attempt at dismissal and obfuscation. You are so at the end of your rope to otherwise explain RF away.

  • It's not worthy of the attention it gets. John.

What do you see as its import? A proof of alien contact? A government test or ruse?

    What?

It's a mess.... Like Roswell, exactly.
