A day with the polite but UAP nincompoops

Billy Cox, in his most recent Life in Jonestown, cited the Ninth Century aerial sailors from Magonia story involving Archbishopv Agobard of Lyon who handled an alleged odd case of otherworldly visitors that “terrified” citizens of Lyon who took up “arms” to capture the visitors….

Agobard felt compelled to intervene. He attacked the witnesses themselves, charging they had been “overcome with so much foolishness” and “made crazy by so much stupidity”; for good measure, the cleric … put these numbskulls in their place.

This Cox reference came on a day in which I was confronted by various Facebook denizens for writing Betty and Barney Hill were not abducted by aliens.

One guy wondering if I would change my mind after debating the matter with Whitley Strieber. And another offering that Betty Hill brought forth Zeta Reticuli "years before it was discovered."

And my put-down of the UAP “study group” SCU raised hackles in the members and fans of that relatively nascent “scientific data gathering” conglomeration of what I called “pretend researchers.”

Responses at FB and here where I reiterated my scorn of SCU’s efforts insist the “data” gathered by SCU is invaluable and scientifically produced.

My counter was (as is usual) that collecting “data” – the term currently used by pretend UFO researchers – takes us nowhere near to what UFOs are or where they derive (come from).

The people I interacted with have been “overcome with foolishness” and “made crazy by so much stupidity” extant in the UAP community at the moment.

The irrationality of normal persons, who are spouting ignorant things, is almost overwhelming and certainly depressing to confront or contend with.

And it is rampant, across the UFO board, even more so than it was in the past with contactees and skeptics who were (and are) as ignorant as those Dark Aged residents of Lyon that Abogard confronted, and was able to calm.

The persons I dealt with were usually polite and courteous, even as I scourged their shibboleths, but they remain dumb as rocks – about the phenomenon and science.

  • Abogard found a way to deal with something he couldn't understand. Did the USAF study Abogard, because they've certainly used his tactics.

Why is it, Rich, that people find it so hard to understand, if not accept, the point you're trying to make? Are people just content to cringe in the darkness instead of trying to find a light switch?

  • Ron,

They are so committed to what they once believed or, in the SCU situation, the guys involved think they really are doing something worthwhile, gathering "data" -- speeds of lights, e-m emissions, colors of those lights and so on.

In warfare, dealing with enemies, troops need information -- not "data" -- to help them find or defeat the foe.

When it comes to UFOs, as you know better than anyone, the phenomenon doesn't respond, in any way, to what we've gathered about it -- speed, color, maneuvers, smells, sounds, size, etc.

Gathering that info -- or data as the "researchers" call it -- makes people think they are doing something.

But it really boils down as an "escape" into a different reality, away from daily, boring duties, work, or family.

I know guys who'll do anything to get a night away from their better half.

The SCU or Liminas people -- even Avi Loeb's Galileo Project gather people who want to make a mark or end up being part of something to be remembered for.

These oafish activities aren't seen by practitioners as foolish. They really believe they are working to solve the UFO riddle.

Now that Vallee has slipped, who is going to tell UFOers that the emperor has no clothes?
