A story in the book (reviewed earlier here) pictured – Chapter 25 The UFOs That Lived (Battle Moutain, Nevada), 1925, Page 139 ff. – tells readers that Flying Saucer editor, Ray Palmer received, in the late 1950s, an account of a 1925 encounter with a strange object.

The author of the letter, Don Wood, Jr. told how he and three aviators, flying WW I monoplanes over the Nevada desert landed on Flat Mesa to explore the “flat place.” [Page 140]

“While walking about the top of this place, we noticed something coming in for a landing. It was about eight feet across and was….[here’s the page itself, which you read, verbatim]:
[article ending] Universe by Brad Steiger and John White published in 1975. Some reaearchers believe that the creatures seen on Flat Mesa in 1925 were a strange form of life that lives in the Earth’s atmosphere and rarely descends to our planet's service.

Some researchers feel that this story would be more believable if it had been reported closer in time to when it actually happened, instead of 34 years later. [Page 142]

That story allows me to remind you that the suggestion UFOs are living entities has been offered by a few UFO enthusiasts over the years and is one that might be considered appropriate for the AATIP things imaged and chased by Navy pilots.
The maneuvers and behavior that some readers here see as ET originated might just be the movements of living creatures with bodies that could be enlarged micro-organisms. Organisms with evolved intelligence.

  • Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about atmospheric creatures in 1913: "Horror of the Heights." I don't know if that was the first or just an early mention of such an idea, but it has obviously been around a long while. I'm not sure how seriously it should be taken, but as for the copy reproduced here, it reads like pure fabrication.

  • Sprites and jets are atmospheric phenomena previously uncategorized, and to their credit the UAP task force says they'll consider anything that falls into that general category. If there's any substance to this, something that's airborne (for the most part), not extraterrestrial and not of the Earth itself, call it a trans-terrestrial phenomenon.

I find it a fascinating theory, though another one that fails to cover all UFO sightings -- unless we decide to re-jig all the old notions.

  • Sprite sightings were long ignored. Sprites are quick, ephemeral, hard to study. Video cameras made it easier. Also, I thought this was interesting
