I'm not a conspiracist but ...
The internet and especially the dark web is rife with material and articles suggesting that the coronavirus is a bio-weapon the Chinese (or even the U.S.) created and it got out of hand, a few sources suggesting that the Chinese, using its citizens initially as sacrificial lambs, thrust the disease into Western societies, hoping to diminish those societies economically and lowering the morale of their citizens in a stab at world domination, via a practice run:

Rich,
Conspiracy theory is much maligned, but there's nothing wrong with it as such: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02691728.2017.1352625
We should keep in mind just who is most intent on attacking conspiracy theorizing:

Apparently engineered bioweapon viruses have a tell-tale genetic framework on which they are constructed - the genetic structure of Covid-19 is supposedly so all over the place it screams 'natural' species jumper, not human creation.

Well, I'm not qualified enough to make the case but internationally recognized expert in infectious disease epidemiology (and former advisor to the Bush and Obama administrations) Michael Osterholm most certainly is.
He is Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute, College of Science and Engineering, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School, all at the University of Minnesota.
He explained exactly why the Covid-19 virus is almost certainly NOT human-engineered on the Joe Rogan podcast which - if you'd like to hear his explanation - requires that you watch a bit of VIDEO!!! (heaven forbid).
If you're gonna watch it Rich, I'll happily clip the relevant bit & post it but if you're going to stick to your usual Luddite stance then I really don't see the point of going to the time & trouble of doing so!
Whole thing's here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3URhJx0NSw with the relevant bit from 18:04.

Thanks for the video link DrDee....I can abide YouTube videos, as you indicate, but a few visiting here might like to see a counter to the conspiracy theory.
An interesting few words in your advocacy of Osterholm's suggestion: "almost certainly NOT human-engineered" -- almost the operative word, yes?

Well as Sean Carroll noted "every scientist should follow each statement of scientific 'fact' with the caveat 'of course, we can never truly know for certain'..." but I obviously defer to the judgment of those recognised as eminent experts in their chosen field.
