The Lack of Catharsis is Killing Ufology
Freud’s conception of “release” described by psychiatry as
catharsis or abreaction is noted in a New York Review of Books review by
Bill McKibben, February 9th, 2017 issue, of David Sax’s new book, The
Revenge of Analog: Real Things and Why They Matter [Public
Affairs, $25.99]
The book and review promote the idea that there is a return
to things analog by young people (millennials); i.e., vinyl LPs, paper
notebooks, board games, et cetera.
In a nod to the expensive magazine The Economist
[$150 for a year subscription], a deputy editor of the magazine offers that
it’s a desire to show off that allows the magazine its present attention by the
younger crowd but more importantly, writes Sax, a magazine “has ‘finishability,’
a defined beginning, middle, and end.” It doesn’t spool on forever in the
manner of the Web” the reviewer (McKibben) points out. [Page 4]
The Economist deputy editor says “We sell the feeling
of being smarter when you get to the end … It’s the catharsis of finishing.”
[ibid]
And that’s it!
UFOs (flying saucers) go on forever, with no explanation, no
denouement.
The phenomenon remains open-ended, all of it: Roswell, in
particular, and every other UFO story or report.
Nothing is resolved or has been resolved, nothing.
Human beings, according the psychiatry and some
philosophical musings, need a terminus, an orgasm as it were, to feel
fulfilled.
Musicians and composers know that musical selections have to
resolve with chords (or codas) that terminate their pieces, and there’s a
“science” for that.
Playwrights who succeed end their plays to provide attendees
to their effort a resolution, but not always, as with Beckett’s Waiting
for Godot, but that’s a syndrome of the modern era, as Jung noted in The
Undiscovered Self and Modern Man in Search of a Soul.
And UFOs, especially in the modern era, seemed amenable to
explanation, but that hasn’t turned out to be.
We are now at a point where many, as I have recently noted
here, have forsaken interest in the phenomenon, whereas the rest of us have
become like the “druids” in Charles Ives’ splendid musical essay, The
Unanswered Question who receive no response from the gods for their
increasingly frenzied queries.
The psychical frustration of no answer(s) to the UFO mystery
have taken their toll and only the psychopathic remnant of the phenomenon will
continue to seek answers, knowing, in their unconscious, that an explanation is
not forthcoming, even with their fantasy of “disclosure.”

How true.
But it's a waiting game, you're either in or out. I'm in but I'm not going crazy here. As we have noted here frequently the uninformed, ignorant, charlatans and the like diffuse the search for "the signal amid the noise."
In a search (or just interest) for explanations, historically there have been solid, informed reporters such that I can't let the bastards get me down and dismiss the subject.
Going back to the early days of NICAP days we had generals devoting time to the subject but, again as you noted, there was no resolution to be found and the enigma remains.
Some time back, on a different subject, when on the dark road to giving up in near despair, I was talking to a bright pal and said I felt like I was going to "crash and burn." Relating to my aviation interest he said, "I don't think so, you've got to think of it in terms of takeoff." This subject is similar, it takes patience to dismis the noise and keep looking for the signal with an open and unpoisoned mind.
There is no answer to an enigma until it is no longer one and it becomes a research project based on the first piece of clear and broadly accepted evidence.

Bryan;
Your statements of belief always depend on irrational appeals, bald logical fallacies: It doesn't matter who believes or how many seemingly solid reports there are when the idea "UFO" is fundamentally absurd--unidentified cannot be an identity--and is known in fact to be based in fiction.
The "enigma" only subsists in the minds of those who quite mistakenly believe in the idea "UFO."
The world is composed of facts. There are no "UFO" facts. There are no real "UFOs."
There is no "UFO" phenomenon, there never was. There is only a modern media-manufactured myth and social delusion. Understanding this is the antidote for the mind poisoned and haunted by the idea "UFO."
Free yourself of the torment of this utterly inconsequential mumbo jumbo. It was never anything but a science-fiction literary device created to sell magazines to imaginative boys.
So there's the only real "answer" you'll ever receive. Otherwise, "no matter how long you live, you will never know any more about UFOs than you know today."

ZOAM:
The facts are; that something is being seen!....In some cases, NOT IDENTIFIED!
Those are the facts! Not all can be wrong, that is a fact! Some, may be!
Something is going on, and THAT, is a fact! Reports don't come in the thousands, without good reason.
The fact that no one can answer to this enigma, not even you, my friend, is a fact in its self, for now.................

My friend Zoam is an entrenched UFO "atheist."
You nor I (nor anyone) can shake him loose from his irrational view.
But ya gotta love his fervor in trying to convince everyone that even the term UFO doesn't exist.

Daniel;
Over a century of reports has produced nothing, nada, zilch. The mere failure to identify doesn't mean anything; and that failure certainly doesn't produce some extraordinary "unknown." The idea that it does is the absurd illogic of the "UFO" myth. People see a lot of things in the sky, not one has ever been shown to be a true "unknown." Never! There's a much better explanation for the UFO" myth. Okay?
Rich;
I could name a great many "UFO" atheist. You know them too! Are we all "irrational?" (vbg)
The term "UFO" does exist, it just doesn't mean anything. It's the name of an imaginary set, a set without any real members.
What's a real "UFO?" No one can say. If they could, it wouldn't be a "UFO."
Love ya!

You have your work cut out for you, trying to get UFO buffs on your side of the argument.
You're the ufological Sisyphus in a way.
Luv ya, too, buddy....(always have, always will)

Talk about piggy in the middle!?:)...?
Zoam,
You say; "Over a century of reports has produced nothing, nada, zilch"
I would say, the reports have produced, real sightings, that are unidentified, hence real UFOs!? Yeah?
You ask; What's a real "UFO?" No one can say. If they could, it wouldn't be a "UFO"
lol:)...
We will even let you ponder, Zoamy:).. It is a real sighting of the unknown, not tangible at the time of viewing. That's real, a real UFO sighting of the unknown!
In other words, the sighting is true, or real, but what is it?
Its a real UFO sighting, Zoamy! You need to use the word; "sightings":) instead of a cunning deception in comment, but its interesting for a smile or so:)..
very catchy, Zoam...............

Rich;
It's completely up to the believer in the "UFO" myth whether he decides to take the red-pill "Psychosocial and Null hypotheses" antidote to the "UFO" myth and delusion.
So no, I'm not any sort of Sisyphus. This isn't any sort of trial or burden.
And neither is it a zero-sum game or any sort of game or contest between equals. "UFO" believers are completely on their own in their opposition to the facts of the world and reason.
Belief in the "UFO" myth subsists only by obstinate belief in a fiction and by a few fundamental logical fallacies: Ignore the obvious; Appeal to ignorance; the Residue fallacy; Reification; Assuming the answer.
"UFO" myth believer credulity accepts fantastic flying-saucer fairy tales as being literally true, when the human perceptual system under unusual circumstances is not very reliable at reporting accurately. And our overwhelming scientific reality proves it's all false anyway, not true, unreal: There are no real "UFOs" of any kind in the world and never were. There is no "UFO" phenomenon, period. Nothing!
Reports, Rich, reports, you're talking about mere "UFO" reports. Anybody can claim anything and do it honestly but be utterly mistaken--the Zond IV/spaceship effect for example in many cases. That's a virtual or subjective "UFO" only; and that's why they're called "UFO" reports. An ambiguous visual stimulus can be no more than that, it can't be a REAL "UFO" until it is demonstrated to have presence, persistence and substance, the fundamental attributes of things said to exist in the world. And at which time it would no longer be "unidentified," my dear buddy.
And so I can quite legitimately and reasonably ask, because it makes that very important point: What's a real "UFO?" No one can say. If they could, it wouldn't be a "UFO."

Zoam, my dear, dear [manic] buddy...
Let say you are right: there is no such thing as a UFO.
Then let's deal with the "reports" -- that is, let's see what brings on the reports.
Are they the products of disordered minds? Are they the products of fraudsters and con men/women?
Are they evidence of a intrinsic human madness?
Are the UFO "sighters" and believers just insanely stupid? Overly credulous morons?
That's what I want to know.
For me it's the phenomenon of the reports. Why?
