Ufology’s aristocracy…..there isn’t any!
Copyright 2018, InterAmerica, Inc.
When you examine various cultural or societal groups, you’ll
come across the crème de la crème within those groups, the best of the best –
those who’ve achieved, by various estimations, accolades, honors, or
recognition.
But look at the list of ufologists and UFO “notables” and
there are none – none! – who may be seen as a part of an aristocracy, even one
defined, haphazardly, by UFO enthusiasts and followers of the UFO phenomenon.
Every – and I mean every! – UFO practitioner, researcher,
writer, advocate, et cetera is considered a kind of buffoon, no matter
how seriously they practice their supposed discipline.
Even the usually prestigious Jacques Vallee is not
considered the summum bonum of ufology by those involved with the UFO
topic, as recent adverse acclimations about him indicate.
Now I respect a few UFO practitioners, as you know (Nick
Redfern, Kevin Randle, Jose Caravaca, et al.) and past notables (Donald
Keyhoe, Rich Hall, Lucius Farish, et al.) but even they (sorry, fellows)
do not make an aristocracy. They are or have been great lights among the UFO
communities they inhabit or inhabited, but they are not aristocrats in the real
definition of the word and societal meaning.
It’s not just that the UFO topic is unworthy of a standing
which would provide aristocratic ambiance – it may be – but it’s because the
topic is flush with intemperate and buffoonish participants, and always has
been.
And those mentioned and not mentioned have not been able to
take ufology or UFOs into the realms that other activities have achieved: the
arts (writing, music composition, painting, photography, et cetera),
science, politics, religion, philosophy, et cetera).
By continuing to laud person of questionable achievement(s),
and I use the term loosely here, such a John Keel, removes any chance of
ufology or the UFO topic becoming respectable.
But even digging deeply into the iconic dredges of UFO lore
leaves one barren of an aristocratic upper layer.
There are no participants who
qualify for the sobriquet aristocratic.
And among today’s practitioners those qualifying are even
less than endowable.
This isn’t shameful, just a realization that aristocracy is
something above the norm and ufology hasn’t created anyone with the
qualifications for the term.

What does it take to become a Ufologist? Click your heels together. Voila! You're a Ufologist.
Since to call oneself a Ufologist requires no standards to be met, no years of formal rigorous study and training, no accreditation by a governing body that assures members in the field adhere to professional ethics and behavior, how can there be an "aristocracy", or more precisely, eminent practitioners when, here's the joke, Ufology is neither a field nor a profession.
Anyone who can copy and paste can produce a UFO book and maybe get on the agenda at a financially struggling UFO conference (whatever get the registration fees paid), no matter what nonsense they're spouting.
All of Ufology's high-profile names have some credibility issues, including the once revered, now-retired Stanton Friedman (Roswell, MJ-12) and the now-fallen Jacques Vallee (Skinwalker, Bigelow, NIDS).
Ufology is just a bunch of people, most of whom speculate wildly or fervently believe in something where there's no objectively examined evidence proving it actually exists.

@purrlgurrl 'Ufology is neither a field nor a profession'.
Well for the likes of Stan Friedman, Nick Redfern, Nick Pope etc, etc.(plus a whole host of considerably less 'credible' individuals) it's clearly both.
You quite evidently can't work in a field that 'doesn't exist' let alone make your living from it which the above individuals obviously did/still do.
What you mean is YOU don't consider it a 'credible' field or profession - which is of course your prerogative but it's just another opinion.
It's 'just a bunch of people, most of whom speculate wildly or fervently believe in something where there's no objectively examined evidence proving it actually exists'
One could of course apply the same viewpoint to other areas of human, er... 'enquiry' - some of which are of course, much better funded (to the tune of billions of dollars)

Anyone who can 'copy & paste' (or indeed hold a pen) can produce & publish a book on anything - but then that's always been the case in a free democracy. I agree that typesetting & printing something in black & white doesn't automatically render it credible or 'true' (as can be seen most days in the UK press).
This doesn't mean this fact can then be logically or validly extrapolated to condemn ALL journalism as such.
Vallee has 'fallen'? How Judaeo-Christian of you - hahahaha! From his place alongside the Omniscient One? (or zoam as he's somethimes known)
I don't think most people with a genuine interest in the subject (which you & zoam clearly aren't) would agree with your pronouncement and since only complete & utter 'skeptics' are held in any regard by the likes of you & Zoam, what's f***ing new?
'Speculating wildly' & 'fervent belief' is clearly a trait common to ideologues on both 'sides' (if only!) of the 'argument'.
Oh and for those inexperienced in dealing with the ideologue 'missionary complex' - here's a quick guide to the 'Chomskian' terms used above:
'She's a Gem!'
usage: apparent 'good natured' general compliment/statement of approval.
meaning: whilst incapable of tolerating opposing viewpoints I (currently) feel no compulsion to smear/provoke/denigrate this person provided they continue to completely agree with me.
'Spot On'
usage:apparent 'good natured' affirmation of a statement deemed 'accurate' &/or 'true'.
meaning: whilst incapable of tolerating opposing viewpoints I (currently) feel no compulsion to smear/provoke/denigrate this person provided they continue to completely agree with me.
So UFO fans watch out for the 'Missionary Man' & his 'null hypothesis' bullshit and
'just remember how incredibly UNLIKELY is your birth -
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space,
Cos there's bugger all down here on Earth.'
Stay safe Space Cadets! :)

The majority of people who have seen UFOs, and have a positive interest in what is going on regarding UFOs do not call themselves 'UFOlogists.' Your very first sentence is spin, and you follow that up with negative generalisation of many thousands of people to suit your biased view.
You take certain negative characteristics that can be found within some of many thousands of people and present this partial view as if it were the complete picture.
You seek to trivialise and dismiss, never to help and strengthen.
Your biggest mistake, and it is a gross conceit, is to convey the impression that you have anything like a complete picture.

-> Ufology’s aristocracy…..there isn’t any!"<-
Really?...Isn't it around the other way?
Ufology (vs) Aristocracy!
Ufology: (The People of the World) (vs) Levels within the Government or those behind MJ12 now, by another name, within; (Aristocracy) -- Ufology (vs) Aristocracy!
in effect!? While trying to prove the impossible, that there is more in Heaven & earth, than you can ever dream of......

Daniel"
Ufology isn't "The People of the World" and those in government are rarely aristocrats.
Somehow you don't get it: Ufology and its followers are the wayward fringe, the oddballs of humanity.
Persons in government are usually bureaucrats, not aristocrats, taken to task by writers such as Kafka and Dostoevsky.
I've got to get you a library card.

Rich:
My point is, Ufology is made up from people around the world, thus, People of the world, and those in government, as you say, are "rarely aristocrats" but never the less, still aristocrats, IN government... Agree, not all of them!
-> Somehow you don't get it: Ufology and its followers are the wayward fringe, the oddballs of humanity.<-
Oh,I get it all to well Rich, this is why you follow with the oddballs of humanity, then exploit Ufology, when the main question in Ufology is; Are UFOs real or not, and if they are real, Why are they here? and where are they from? What does this have to do with aristocrats, other than certain parties holding information from us oddballs of humanity, that Ufology is trying to unfold and make some headway as to what the answers might be, while the rest of humanity is asking; What's a UFO? or exploiting Ufology as just; Clicking your heels together.Voila! You're a Ufologist. [And your day is made?] Talk about hypocrisy, from one who has had three separate sighting of his own. Either you did, or you didn't Rich!!! and if you have, as you said you have, then I'm surprised that you are not so fourth coming, in support of Ufology, which IS why we are all here, talking about this. You know the UFO story, yet your in denial of it,so if it is all Hum-bug to you, then what was it that "YOU" saw, on those three separate occasions?.......

Daniel:
My point in the aristocrat post was to show that while other cultural activities have had and have persons who raise their particular activities to profound heights which catches and often changes humanity, for the better I might add.
No one has done that in the filed of ufology or about the UFO topic without the ufology epithet.
I'm not raving about whether UFOs exist or not nor what they may be. I'm ranting about how the topic doesn't have and never has had anyone or any group that made or makes UFOs worthy of exaltation.
Every activity or discipline I note in the posting has had persons or groups that made their interest something special and edifying.
Ufology hasn't done that. There are no and have been no persons or groups that have achieved a respected status or created an ambiance that has made UFOs into something with a special cultural status, like that in literature, art, music, science, even sport, et cetera.
Ufology is flush with mediocre persons, who look goofy, act goofy and lack a mentality that might cause people to pay attention to them or the topic.
You, Daniel, are primarily concerned with UFOs as a reality, a truth of some kind. You're not interested in the societal or cultural aspects of the phenomenon.
That's fine but not in the academic ballpark where the whole of the phenomenon has to be considered, not just the appearance or actuality of the things.

Fair enough Rich, but does it really matter, when so many other things like in literature, art, music, science, even sport, et cetera, that have achieved a respected status, that you mention. Ufology is not that well known by many, & only by the few,"in comparison" to the population of any country we might talk of. Where the other events you speak of, ARE! on everyone's mind. That can be the difference!
-> I'm not raving about whether UFOs exist or not nor what they may be. I'm ranting about how the topic doesn't have and never has had anyone or any group that made or makes UFOs worthy of exaltation. <-
*
And it won't either, until Ufology can prove its claim; "That we are not alone, etc"
I can hear the woodwork stirring already:)..
-> You, Daniel, are primarily concerned with UFOs as a reality, a truth of some kind. You're not interested in the societal or cultural aspects of the phenomenon.<-
*
I wouldn't say "concerned" but curious! eager to know something, "inquisitive" you might say. I AM, interested in the societal or cultural aspects of the phenomenon, although, I've not thought much about this before, so for me, there's something new every day, to ponder.......

Rich, my 2 cents on your central thesis is that I would liken the search for UFO "truth" to the search for truth concerning the JFK assassination. Hundreds and hundreds of non-experts have written articles and books and op/eds about what happened at Dallas and why. Much is garbage and noise BUT some is interesting and revealing as almost everyone tries to expand our knowledge about a very small piece of the puzzle. (We have books and articles about the rifle; about the wounds; about the Tippet killing; about the Z movie; about Oswald's Russian adventure; about the crack in the windshield, etc.) The point being that there is no JFK aristocracy, either. There are just various individuals from all walks of life that have stepped forward and explored some aspect of the killing and perhaps, just perhaps, increased our understanding of the event.
Ufo books have been written by scientists, by historians, by engineers, and by dozens of writers of various professions. To ridicule honest work is unfair. Since it is not obvious (yet) what the subject matter really is (!), to demand an expertise and some profound insight is premature. Progress in these unusual areas moves slowly and at the margin until, ala Kuhn, the flood gates open and we get an alternative paradigm. Hang in there.

Dominick:
I'd love to see the UFO topic on the front burner of society's grill, so I could broach the matter in venues where it's now not sensible to do so. (One loses credibility, in my media circles, by pretending UFOs are suitable for intelligent conversation.)
