In the context of societal craziness – the totally berserk
behavior of humans who use social media (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, et
al.) – how is it that no one does stupidly insane things when confronted by
a paranormal situation?
That is, how is it that no one has the presence of mind to
chase a UFO with their private plane? Or how is it that no one has their smart
phone camera ready when a strange object is flying close enough to provide detail?
(We see from social media and such TV programs as Funniest
Home Videos how people manage to capture “precious” moments as when grandma
falls into a lake or a dog grabs a bicycle and rides it into a bush, and a
myriad of other spontaneous moments of odd behaviors, some accidental, some
concocted, and some just caught happenstance.)
And in today’s ungraceful pushiness by men and women who
commit acts of minor insult or serious violence during road rage incidents or
acts of violence against cops doing their duty, how is that no one who is
pounced upon by Men in Black doesn’t beat the living sh*t out of them when they
are confronted by such irritating bastards?
When men and women shoot exotic or near extinct animals in
Africa for sport, why is it no one takes a shot at a perceived Big Foot
(Sasquatch)?
It’s odd, seemingly, that otherwise stupidly crazy
millennials will jump off a dangerous cliff to get a viral following but no one
seems to have the presence of mind to try and grab what appears to be a ghost or
spirit that ends up in their presence?
Human society is flush with blatant, unclassy and dodgy
activity, but when it comes to things that impact from the fringe everyone
becomes cagey or fearful, hesitant to act or react.
Something doesn’t add up….

Your questions are easily answered.
1. Smart phones. No UFO would be stupid enough to fly close at hand to anyone possessing
a smart phone. Dammit, these UFOnauts are far cleverer than you give them credit for.
2. You don't really suppose anyone can match the super-strength (of muscle & mind) of
the 'Men in Black'? This explains why they have evaded capture by anyone on earth.
3. Again, ghosts, spirits, Bigfoot and even the Loch Ness Monster very likely have the
ability to enter a higher dimension of spacetime when confronted by we humans. Hence
the lack of real, hard evidence for any of these.
So, regrettably, it looks like we humans can never match the ingenuity and far superior strength in mind and body of these strange 'entities'. Which accounts for why they can, and will, forever evade us.
I realise that this may not be the answer you were expecting, but there it is.

Hello Rich, it could be argued that most close encounters are very short and startling. Too brief to risk fishing out the camera, turning it on and capturing what could be lights against the dark sky.
I also wonder about the cases that are perhaps more likely to be perceptual rather than obviously material. Those might include something close to a fugue state or a refocusing of cognitive processing. I think you'll agree that the 'Oz Factor' incidents are almost certainly not entirely occurring in the consensus reality.
It's good to see you and, as ever, fondest regards.

Travis Walton allegedly charged a UFO and seemingly got himself abducted as a result. I can't cite any specific examples off the top of my head but I have read of plenty of encounters where the pilot of a plane - private or otherwise, has tried to go in for a closer look at an anomalous object.

I was reading elsewhere on the Anomalist blog about the helicopter pilots back in the 60s who had a very close and clear UFO encounter with a metallic cigar-shaped object with bright green and red lights. This was also witnessed by a family in a car, Something really did happen, and yet it seems none of the witnesses had a camera to hand. What’s apparent now the smartphone put a camera in everyone pocket, is that we don’t seem to get such reports anymore. Why is that?

Since the smartphone put a high-definition camera in all our pockets, there has been a sparsity of close-up, multiple-witness metallic craft accounts of the type that were recorded for decades up to the turn of the century.
Indeed, imagine if one of the Rendlesham witnesses was in possession of an iPhone X when confronted by the other-worldly craft, or for that matter the lady who witnessed the UFO occupants above her house, or how about the Coyne case helicopter pilots and witnesses on the ground? Hell, imagine if Lonnie had been able to pull out his Samsung Galaxy and solve the debate of THAT insignia before it ever started.
Now we able to capture the proof with a device that we always carry about with us, Lo and behold the UFOs and their occupants have gone missing.
