A 1960 UFO "event" recalled in 1978 (Provided by Paul Dean)

  • 1960 Events recalled in 1978, you say! Some of it second hand! Wow!

Finally, the evidence we have all been looking for!

  • But Lance...

All of history (except for contemporary history, news events) are recalled and second or third, or more, hand).

That's the way of story telling.

I'd prefer to get a report from the time it happened, like Zamora's Socorro incident, but even then there are questions (problems), as you well know.

    C'est la vie.

  • Rich, the description of the sound reminds me of analogue electronics, like a radio tuned off-station.

What I find abnormal: during this event, neither of the two principals (grandfather, grandson) did anything. When one sees a stranger in one's yard, especially at night, one tends to respond "Hey you! What are you doing in my yard? Get outta here before I call the cops!"...or perhaps something less belligerent.

The description of the being is very detailed.

"Rhodes" is a surname. When a surname is used for a first or middle name it indicates it is a family name. One can guess a Mr McCarroll married a Miss Rhodes sometime in the past.

The McCarrolls in Memphis who match is the family of the Assistant Chief of Police, Bruns McCarroll. I don't know the relationships, but living in his house in 1960 is William Rhodes McCarroll. Whoever the principals were, they were likely in this family.

  • There are so many incidents of this kind, Don, that I'm not sure where to categorize them.

They all can't be psychological (or neurological) in nature. (Can they be?)

And they can't all be ET oriented either. (Can they?)

Such bizarre events are enigmatic in a unique way, maybe in the Caravacian sense: his Distortion Theory.

But why such a psychical, maladjusted mental condition in an epidemic condition?

  • The number of instances is daunting. In order to do anything besides cataloging, some triage has to be done which would give one some instances worth pursuing. In this instance what we know from the witness is that he and his grandfather lived in the same house and that others besides them lived there, too. His grandfather had an upstairs bedroom where he would "write up his orders".

We are missing something important, the age of the witness at the time. It matters if he was 8 years old or 18 or 28.

The description of the figure is very detailed. My first thoughts reading it were medical school, mortician, tailor, chiropractor. Except for the widespread legs, the figure, as drawn and described, is similar to an academy awards Oscar, which is sword-shaped, and as well has a sword pointing down and the hilt held at the chest. The Oscar is gold plated so might be said to 'glow'.

There is one 'anticipatory explanation': he implies his grandfather's bedroom was isolated in the house and so the sound was not heard beyond his bedroom.

The witness appeals for an answer to the sounds he did not hear, rather than the figure he did see. He doesn't draw the "basketball" shape or mention anything about it afterwards.

I'm not much for 'psychologizing' when all I have is a written narrative rather than an actual person as the subject. My use of 'normal' and 'abnormal' refers to social or public behavior set in a time and place. So, more like sociology and its branches.

Their behavior during the event seems odd or abnormal to me. They view it and comment on it. As mentioned, although they are "astounded" they are not motivated to confront it, nor do they call for the others in the house to view it with them, yet the estimate of the time of the event is about 15 minutes. It is as if they were watching tv.

We cannot describe what we do not have language for. I think, though, it is bred in the bone for us to impose, unconsciously, a description on the 'undescribable'. This may be the case here, if it is not 'psychologcal' or a hoax.

We really need to know whether the witness was a boy or a man in 1960.

  • Don:

You are providing a methodology or examination that represents what should be done in all UFO cases, but rarely, if ever, is.

That this case is lamentably "recalled" long afterward also complicates, as Lance notes, the process of determining what actually was observed or happened.

With what we have -- what is presented -- one can only try to add it to other cases and see what data (or information) can be gleaned, information/data that is similar or resonates with other incidents.

  • Yes, giving careful consideration to every jot and tittle of a dumb 18 year old "recollection" is a fool's errand. Many UFO nuts are exactly such fools, pedantically pretending that they are working from Moses' tablets.

  • Listen you heavy hitter (Lance)...

You have got to calm down or you'll blow a gasket.

Treat UFO reports, here and elsewhere, as fairy tales, and enjoy the fun.

    Luv ya,

  • I used to look at it that way, Rich. I didn't imagine that too many folks were in the lunatic fringe of critical thinking.

Unfortunately, it appears (judging from the conspiracy and fantasy prone world we live in, where the truth is simply disregarded) that I vastly underestimated the dumbass quotient.

UFO belief makes the world a worse place to live because it teaches folks to think bad.

  • I'm going to deal with the madness, again Lance.

It's not just dumb-assery but a kind of insanity....
