UFOs are lousy as a myth …

…and even lousier as a reality.
While some of my UFO pals insist that UFOs are only a myth,
in the making still, I find the phenomenon execrable as a myth, and as a
reality UFOs are just as fetid.
Mythology is replete with moralities and truths that
supersede everyday contingencies, and one finds in Greek myth (the
lives/actions of the gods, the warriors of Greek battles, et cetera) or
the Epic of Gilgamesh and the tales of Britain’s King Arthur, et al.,
transcendental beauty and a refinement of behavior (good and bad).
And in reality, real reality, there are examples of
monumental glories, even inside the tales of war and death, much captured by
paintings and photography and literary/news accounts.
But in the UFO lore, the stories creating the so-called
flying saucer myth, are foul and often loathsome, without beauty or truth, ugly
accounts of sightings and encounters.
That UFOs are a prevailing or developing myth goes against
the idea of myth as expounded most elegantly and eruditely by Joseph Campbell.
Even the coarse Roman myths excel in profound truths and
exquisite beauty: Ovid’s Metamorphoses for example.
And Shakespeare’s The Tempest, as a metaphorical
work flush with mythical themes, has glories and ugliness that remain
aesthetically accessible to literary cognoscenti.
Are UFOs, as a myth, deflated by those cultural ruffians who’ve
captured the tales and made them lurid with biases and their own neurotic
taints?
Some how the patina of ufology has been sleazy, since flying
saucers and UFOs entered the human zeitgeist.
UFO reports/stories have always been withered by the hoi polloi
who create (witness) UFOs and those who retell the stories of the rabble.
This is mythmaking (or reportage of reality) by the
intellectually hebetudinous; refinement is lacking at the core.
UFOs, in essentia, are, often, merely reports by inarticulate purveyors of observations that haven’t a scintilla of profundity
at their base.
For skeptics, a few whom I admire and love, to keep
inserting that UFOs are myth, dilutes and miscasts myth itself, which is one of
the high spots of human imagination and creative endeavor.
UFOs are, generally [sic], made-up stories from the dregs of
misplaced and simple minds, hovering not in mythological territory but, rather,
above the basement of the proletarian existentia.
