Odd little entities, from where and why?

My dear pal, Spanish UFO researcher José Antonio
Caravaca, often writing here, and I have been enthused for a long time with
what we call the Rosa Lotti case, a 1954 UFO encounter in Cennina, Italy, once
presented in Life magazine, depicted thusly:

"Edward Lavacchi, from Florence, said that while he
was working in the Montebenichi area (Italy) in the summer of 1930, he had
heard directly the strange story of an old woman. Apparently while the woman
was washing clothes in the Ambrella River, between 6 and 8 in the morning she
had heard a loud whistle and felt a breath of air.
About 20 meters away she saw a kind of "spinning
top" that came ashore. After opening a trap door, two small beings
emerged, barely a meter high, emitting strange sounds. The humanoids walked
around the witness, even touching it, and took a pair of socks that were lying
down.
The case came to light at least 53 years later, through a
letter sent by a man to an investigation team following the publication of an
article in a local newspaper in 1983.
The man said he heard the story in 1930, at the time he
was 20 years old. There were some vague confirmations by people in the area. It
cannot be ruled out that his memories were influenced and processed according
to the news in his possession of the Cennina case".

When I asked José how this “new” case fits into his
Distortion Theory. Here’s his response:
“Carigi told me that there is no more information than a
letter, and that they have not been able to verify the testimony because they
could not talk to anyone who knew this witness. But without a doubt it is clear
that the interaction of the paradigm with women (and men) from rural areas, and
with little culture perhaps, offers encounters with behaviors more similar to
the entities of ancient folklore... we are talking about basic behaviors,
stealing, jokes, jumps and laughs...”
What are we to make of such tales? Albert Rosales has gathered hundreds or thousands of such UFO accounts involving beings or entities and has presented them online and in his many-volume book series, Humanoid Encounters, which I've often cited here.
And José has offered many such cases to example and clarify his theory which states that such encounters are thrust upon "witnesses" by an external agent (a psychic intrusion working via a witnesses mental make-up and quasi-archetypal images mixed with the common artifacts endemic to a witness's conscious and unconscious thoughts and memories). [Excuse my lame presentation of José's elaborate and complex hypothesis.]
What's your take on such stories?
