Ufology’s lack of depth

Fooling around on Facebook tells me that UFO material there is rather shallow, but that’s true of UFO study/thought everywhere.

However, some blogs and web-sites try to comprehend the phe- nomenon with some rigor and mental gymnastics. (You know which ones.)

On Facebook, a handful of UFOers present intriguing premises or openings but those are subdued by the commentary (comments) that underlie UFO pages. Facebookers are, generally, a superficial lot.

But the same is true of commentary underneath blogs – this one and almost all the others extant; Eric Wargo’s an exception and a few others.

Thinking nowadays is, itself, shorn of depth. Is it the pandemic? Or just the nature of humanity’s descent from rigorous thought to vaporous cogitation, begun in the modern era as Jung outlines in Modern Man in Search of a Soul and Freud discloses in Civilization and its Discontents?

Academics are giving its all in a number of pertinent areas: Consciousness, Reality (Quantum and Classical), Physics (also Quantum and Classical), Culture, et cetera.

But ufology (to use that forlorn rubric for UFO enthusiasm or study) is flat out on top of matters that may get at the root of the phenomenon; on top but no deeper.

The COVID-19 thing has made buffoons of almost everyone, certainly almost everyone who’s involved or has been in the UFO topic. (Go to Facebook for examples.)

For instance I got a rejoinder the other day from a rabid skeptic who visits here. He chides persons for paying attention to UFOs or anything related, but he is more enjoined in UFOs than “normal” UFOers, the man screeding vituperously against UFO belief and its attention by UFO enthusiasts while his efforts against them and their interest is monumentally greater than anything UFO enthu- siasts are enthused about.

His attention to UFO enthusiasm is psychologically warped, and he doesn’t recognize his own pathology, something his career is built upon, supposedly.

That kind of dedication by skeptics would make me laugh if it wasn’t so insane.

My point, aside from skeptic irrationality, is that mild madness and goofiness have engulfed UFOs for now, even more so than in the past, and we who like to think, seriously, about the phenomenon are hard put to get support from our UFO comrades.

They are too suffused with the non-UFO world right now.
