The Awareness of Another Reality (or Realities)

Copyright 2019, InterAmerica, Inc.

Primitive man was occasionally struck by an awareness that something more existed than the ratty reality he found himself in.

After about 10,000 B.C. an odd awareness that something other than what was being perceived (lived) kept sneaking up on people, from the mouths and cultural artifacts of prophets, artists, writers, et al., persons who had established some kind of credibility and/or profundity.

The Egyptians, Sumerians, Babylonians, Hittites, and other Middle Eastern societies all produced “religions” and oral tales and texts with alternate realities, at a time when imaginary mental forays should have been rare.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is one. (Bryan Sentes and I discussed Joan Acocella’s recent piece about the work in The New Yorker.)
And, of course with the oral stories of Homer [The Iliad and The Odyssey] we have what may be episodes from reality embellished by time and literary interlopers, and finally showing up as text.

Let me dwell on the Biblical texts of the Hebrews where the flush of another reality is egregious, even offensive in its perceived unrealness, but there it is…

The Enoch account of traveling in the heavens and hearing about The Watchers has become hackneyed.

Elijah and Elisha’s ascents into the heavens are told as if a real travelogue.

The Ezekiel UFO/four-headed chariot too, while Jacob’s ladder rings a slight bell.

But let me zero in on that Ezekiel UFO as recounted in Ezekiel, Chapter 1 right through to Chapter 12, written sometime between 593 and 571 B.C.
Ezekiel’s “vision” included a “great cloud and a fire infolding it…and out of the midst thereof, that is, out of the midst of the fire, as it were the resemblance of amber. And in the midst thereof the likeness of four living creatures….there was the likeness of a man in them. Everyone had four faces, and everyone four wings.” [Chapter 1; Verses 4-6]

You know the rest or should: intense metaphorical language and descriptive flourishes of an almost grotesque kind.

And n Chapter 3, the “man” (God?) gives Ezekiel a book of lamentations, canticles, and woes, and was told (commanded) to eat the book.

Some commentaries of Ezekiel and his vision may be read here:

That AA theorists use the Josef Blumrich book to assert that Ezekiel’s encounter was of an extraterrestrial craft and his creatures, and man, were ETs.
Whatever Ezekiel was describing was not normal reality but an actual paranormal account of another reality, a grand reverie induced hallucination, or a vivid allegorical metaphor meant to persuade the Hebrews to obey God and live according to Hebraic laws and practices.

If Ezekiel thought his ipsedixitism was understood by the Hebrew people, or even today’s modern populace, his pomposity would be unbearable.

But Ezekiel had prophetic cachet and his vision may be accepted as fictive or actuality, and a perception (vision) of some other reality, one that kept (and keeps) showing up much after Ezekiel’s lifespan and prophetic endeavors.

Mohammed’s journey to the Seventh Heaven is of a kind like that of Ezekiel and other Old Testament  or Hebrew prophets:

These are the realities that either happened or did not but they are insights to alternate reality and show up again after the Dark Ages. Why?

The Loss of Primitive Reality [Continued]

Copyright 2019, InterAmerica, Inc.

This book which I’ve highlighted before is a must-read if one wants to understand the primitive mind

And while I suggest it here, I’m shortcutting to what I see as the recognition of primitive man’s perception of reality before and then at the point when the idea of an alternate or other reality intrudes.

Since we’re dealing here beginning in the Paleolithic period (Stone Age) – 2.5 million years ago -- all the way to its end -- about 10,000 B.C., a lot happens and art during those years is extensive but does help understand when man became conscious of his/her daily (“normal’) reality and when that daily reality was striven by an awareness of another reality.

The in-and-out of alternate realities has, not an evolutionary process but, an insertion off-and-on with some humans, a few, but only a few, and those few show up during the Paleolithic period just as the few show up after and into the modern era.

One of the first examples of an awareness of human reality is the creation of various “venus” statuettes, such as the Aceulian proto-figurine dated around 280,000-250,000 years ago:
Other “venus’ figurines, known by many, include the “Venus of  Willendorf” …
... but those sculpted figures, seemingly idolistic icons, while interesting, do not indicate a fuller appreciation of what some early artists perceived as reality.

While Neanderthal funeral-like rituals bespeak an awareness of another reality – death – that instinctive awareness seems neurological, as Freud intuited, not a conscious appreciation of another reality outside the normal, daily reality

The reality that is conscious and presented by early man shows up in various cave arts but particularly those found in Lascaux, France, dating from about 17,000 years ago:
More examples of the realistic perception:
Some realistic art precedes these creative efforts and some follow but it’s the extent of Lascauxian art that indicates a mental awareness that what Neolithic man was observing (and creating) was the reality that mankind was part of, the common reality.

At what point that perception changed took place about 10,000 B.C. when a few cave art creations changed from realism to idealism or something less tangible:
The images above from :

Ancient Alien theorists use the above art examples as paintings of extraterrestrial beings experienced by early man but that is disputable and such art may represent an awareness of an alternate reality conceived while the artist was under the influence of hallucinogenic plants or drinks. Either way, the images are of something other than the normal reality mankind experienced each day upon awakening.

Where does this take us? My next installment will attempt to show the path to more, later examples of other perceived realties.
