Fringe [?] UFO accounts most of us tend to ignore

While the AATIP videos and the absurd possibility of disclosure hold the current ufological spotlight, in the background lurks a few one-time “fashionable” UFO topics: those Green fireballs, older, little known or unknown UFO tales/reports, and encounters with UFO entities (a favorite of Spanish UFO researcher José Caravaca).

The green fireball sightings of the late 1940s and early 1950s, of interest to Martin Black, here, and me, also, were never really identified or explained, despite their intrinsic fascinating nature.

No one will go back to the collected data and material gathered by esteemed astronomers Lincoln La Paz or Clyde Tombaugh, maybe put off by the possibility that the phenomenon was part of a secret U.S. military experiment that seems to have gone nowhere.

Yet, whatever those green fireballs were, they still intrigue some UFOers, Martin and me among them.

There are a number of interesting flying saucer reports that have gotten lost in the mix of UFO stories that have been spotlighted for some reason or another. Here are a few of those orphaned stories:

In The Complete Book of UFOs (pictured) by Jenny Randles and Peter Hough [Sterling Publishing, NY, 1996], the authors provide accounts of “super planes” seen in the skies of Scandanavia in the mid-1930s,  hundreds of reports of “recognizable flying machines which possessed capabilities way beyond the technology of that time.” [Page 41]

“A parish priest of Lantrask in Sweden observed mysterious aircraft on several occasions during 1932 and 1933. In the summer of 1933 the craft flew over the area no fewer than twelve times … Once it skimmed just a few metres above the parsonage and he made out two figures in the cabin.” {Page 40]

“A lighthouse keeper … reported an aircraft which he had observed on two occasions. On Monday, 8 January 1934, he saw it hover … After a time it spiraled towards the sea, stopped short, then ascended again – repeating the manoeuvre for an hour.” [Page 42]

“No marks or insignia were visible [on these spotted aircraft and The engine stopped during their [flights].” [Page 41]

All the strange aircaft seen in the time-frame were considered “state of the art” or beyond the state of aircraft at that time.

“A truly dramatic case … [took place] on 9 January 1981 … in the village of Trans-en-Provence [France].”

“A farmer … Rento Nicolai … working outside … heard a ‘faint whistling’. He turned to see ‘a device in the air at the height of a big pine tree …not spinning, coming lower towards the ground’. It was like a slightly elongated egg with four circular openings on the base …. It was there for a very short time and ‘right away it lifted off, still emitting a slight whistling sound’. It ‘kicked off a little dust when it left’. The object – slightly smaller than the size of a car – climbed about twenty feet up and then sped away to the north-east. Nicolai said it was ‘the colour of lead. The device had a ridge all the way around its circumference.’ Two of the holes ‘could be reactors or feet There were also two other circles which looked like trapdoors.’ … He had no doubt that it was a constructed machine” [Pages 204/205]

Micah Hanks, in his chapter Cosmic Peeping Toms: UFOs and Invisibility for the book, UFOs & Aliens: Is There Anybody Out There? [New Page Books, NJ, 2011] tells readers about a very strange UFO account from July 1988 over an island in the North Pacific called Johnson Atoll.

Steven, a U.S. Air Force member, called in to a radio show Micah was hosting to tell about strange things over the atoll which housed biological weaponry.

He and others spotted, that summer night, a small, dark metallic ball hovering in the sky.

Nobody could identify the “vaguely metallic ball, which seemed to absorb light rather reflect it.

Radar on the island “couldn’t paint this thing.”

The base commander entertaining a two-star general also “were looking at it.”

“Suddenly the object stopped directly over the middle of the island and seemed to begin a slow descent; the tine metallic ball now appeared to be growing larger … and filled more and more of the sky … the object got bigger, and bigger, and bigger,’ Steven said.”

“ … he continued to watch this [now] enormous, unidentified object literally close in on them … this object dwarfed even the largest known aircraft used by the Air Force at the time …  the object’s circumference could easily have been the length of the island … [and] he couldn’t tell for certain whether it was round or flat, because it seemed to be absorbing light … As the [daylight] got brighter, this thing got blacker and bigger.”

“As the black void loomed above, Steven said that the water and the air on the island became charged with electricity. ‘You could almost taste it.’”

“Then … the moment the sun cracked the horizon, this thing vanished. And I don’t mean it flew away: I don’t mean it went left or right. This thing just wasn’t there anymore! … It just went – it disappeared.”

Steven offered a conjecture: “ … I think that whatever this thing was – whatever “they” [were] – I think we witnessed a malfunction. I think something went wrong with this thing’s technology for a moment, and it was at the wrong time [in] the wrong place.” [Page 110 ff.]

And in Albert Riosales’ Humanoid Encounters: The Others Amongst Us 2010-2015 [Triangulum Publishing, 2016] there are many encounter events, such as this one on Page 183 from MUFON files:

A witness in Crisfield, Maryland, with a friend, on October 10^th 2015, saw glowing, orange orbs popping in and out of view.The witness captured something on his cellphone before the orbs disappeared.

" ... in one picture, there is a line of lights in the shape of a saucer and possibly two grey human-like beings on top it":

Albert provides a story from Raymond Fowler [[Page 193]:

Fowler’s father (as told in Alternative Perceptions #28), stationed in 1923 at a U.S. Navy compass station in Maine experienced an electrical storm that sent a lightning bolt that hit a cable outside the building, sending the bolt into Fowler’s father’s stomach.

A fiery light shone from the man’s stomach and formed a field of light around Fowler’s paralyzed father when, suddenly, three flashes of light and three majestic men appeared. They wore shining robes and were smiling.

The men had very fine features, light cream textured complexions and extremely bright eyes. They wore soft doeskin form-fitting boots.

One being pointed at the fiery ball of light on the witness abdomen and in a flash it leaped into the being’s hand, which the being tossed to one of the other entities, who threw it to the third being, who threw it into a copper mesh screening at the station, where the fiery ball went up in a shower of sparks and disappeared. All three men smiled, bowed, and disappeared in three flashes of light.

There are, as you well know, hundreds – dare I say thousands? – of such accounts, stories, reports in UFO lore.

And in them reside clues as to what UFOs are and/or mean.

But no one, no organization, has really applied effort to discern what is wheat and what is chaff, UFOers moving from distraction to distraction, disclosure being the most recent sidebar.

Meanwhile the UFO enigma goes about its activity, without fear or trepidation, leaving a few of us muddled, just as we were when we first started looking at the mystery.
