Bryan Sentes, Persinger, and Crackpottery

My pal Bryan Sentes has a piece, at his blog, on the passing of Michael Persinger, a researcher that my buddy (now deceased) Bruce Duensing (may he rest in peace also, like Mr. Persinger) lauded in his blog many times.

I’m presenting a few excerpts here from Bryan’s Persinger salute; excerpts about electro-magnetics that Mr. Persinger was obsessed by and studied extensively:

“What is compelling, though, is the way his research suggests that the Earth herself might be imagined to communicate with human beings via EM phenomena.

“That Contactees and Abductees both have received warnings concerning environmental catastrophe segues nicely with the notion that the Earth articulates her concerns via tectonic energies and an available image reservoir, whether a Collective Unconscious or not. That Earth itself transmits EM energies at 30-33 Hz (an instance of a numerological pattern that runs through the whole mythos) and that these transmissions are called Extra-low Frequency (ELF) waves is also poetically suggestive, especially in view of the links made to Faery lore and the UFO mythology by, among others, Jacques Vallee….”

I love Bryan Sentes, as he (and others) well know, but Bryan is absorbed by what I call crackpottery, theories and thinking from great, intelligent humans that border on madness.

(Bryan got me enthused by the Eleusis mysteries to the point that I ordered a book yesterday about the crazy mysteries, before I saw in Amazon that Aleister Crowley and The Rosicrucians also were absorbed by the alleged use of psychedelics that many Greek philosophers used to enhance their thinking. Crowley and The Rosicrucians? Give me an intellectual break!)

Bryan’s enthusiasm for “far-out” ideas is troubling for me, as his is one of the finest brains writing about UFOs today.

And his UFO commentary is moderated by his brilliance and caution to be lucid and logical.

Yet, he sure likes to insert names and ideas from the fringe of thought, and support those ideas with a bountiful amount of examples and data that give credence to them.

And this he is doing with Persinger’s views.

I’ve watched Persinger videos off and on and took in his experimental methodology with hesitancy as Persinger tapped in to the electromagnetism that surrounds the Earth and impacts human beings.

My cautions come from Persinger’s use of equipment that measures electromagnetism but doesn’t ensure that the equipment is not compromised by the very thing it is supposed to be measuring.

Like psychedelics ad other hallucinogens that alter brain waves, Bryan thinks that electromagnetism, much as Tesla thought too, is integral to human kind, the Earth, and living matter; it’s Ancient Astronaut kind of thinking.

And it may have some validity, which Bryan is sure to find in some esoteric or arcane works.

But such theorizing, as my friend Bruce Duensing loved, is as close to madness as possible without being psychotic.

It strays from the Descartian reality to the boundaries of Foucaultian madness that permeates minds with too much upon them, causing descent from common sense.

Bryan offers, at his blog, that he will be providing thoughtful sustenance to Persinger’s ideas and his own about those ideas.

I can barely wait….as I am absolutely enchanted by the waywardness of human thought.
