The Superficiality and/or Self-Defeating Behavior of UFO Enthusiasts

Yes, I’m embarrassed to disclose to my media followers and friends that I’m a UFO buff, but you know that.

What keeps getting my goat is how almost everything in the UFO community is an embarrassment to the topic, and for reasons that could be corrected.

Firstly, look at the commentary that follows blog entries (here and elsewhere) or the input at UFO sites generally.

That commentary is woefully shallow more often than not, the commentators applying opinion and broadsides that would make a moron seem Hawking-like.

Please, take a gander at the comments (past and present) across the board at your favorite UFO source and weep tears at the stupidity or non-relevant ripostes.

(I won’t cite examples as many would come from this blog, Kevin Randle’s, Mysterious Universe, and egregiously at blogs that are just too inane for my or your attention.)

Then there are (sometimes) astute blog posts, many that I note here and Bill Murphy at the Anomalist provides regularly.

But some of those are authored by UFO enthusiasts who keep using nom de plumes that put off UFO outsiders and many inside the community: Red Pill Junkie for one, or Mr. Sweepy who dialogues at Kevin’s blog regularly.

What academic is going to follow or read a comment or blog penned by someone using a goofy name rather than his or her given moniker?

There are hundreds of assumed names, many often accompanied by photos or graphics that seem to indicate mental instability or idiotic hubris.

And those one-namers! Do they think they’re Cher or Beyoncé?

The UFO topic is queer enough. Does it need to be made queerer by those asinine names and comments from its adherents?
