The Quasi-Theology of UFOs

That Ufology has all the fixtures of a belief system, a religion, is obvious to most objective UFO enthusiasts; but not to hard-core believers or hard-core non-believers.

They are too immersed in their mind-sets to see how much their positions have a religious patina, some so steeped in a faith-based orientation that they resemble Christian evangelicals or Muslim mumins and the skeptics opting to accept an atheistic aura.

A few visitors here assume a reserved air, feigning objectivity and caution but underneath their flaccid façade is a florid fervency, seething to break out.

Looking at readers and visitors to other UFO sites, one can see a palpable desire to believe or not believe.

If you remove the UFO sobriquet, an outsider would think that God, Allah, or Jesus is what’s being discussed (debated).

I, and you, can name the UFO atheists, just as we can name religious atheists, standing out because they are a vivid minority, while UFO and religious believers are harder to enumerate, flush in numbers so great that they are almost anonymous.

But UFO believers, especially those of the ETH sect, are particularly zealous in their belief….that UFOs are not only real but containing, living, breathing entities from places far flung from Earth, the “heavens.”

How can we few UFO agnostics make clear that UFO atheism or UFO belief are flawed systems of thought?

I abjure the ignorance that I allow space for here, at this blog, much just innocent naïveté but a few hoping to insert blasphemies of various kinds, some adopting a mantle of hubris not unlike that of those verminized Catholic Inquisitors; you know, the kind that burned Joan of Arc and Giordano Bruno at the stake.

One can find the thoughtful ruminations of UFO believers, equivalent to that of the early Church Fathers or Dominican scholastics and “reformation” heretics, alongside the castigations not unlike that of Bertrand Russell, Christopher Hitchens, or Richard Dawkins.

But the faithful UFO followers, the doltish many, abound and that’s what ufology and the UFO topic is dealing with and has always dealt with, sadly.

UFO belief (and disbelief): the opiate of the great unwashed mass.
