I have a presence on YouTube, and while I eschew YouTube links that are
sent my way – links to material I’m not inclined to watch – I do scout YouTube
for music videos, opera and classical pretty much.
Recently I stumbled across documentaries about conductors of
the past – the greats – some of which I liked (and have LPs of their
performances) but were lions beholden to Hitler’s Third Reich: Furtwängler,
Knappertsbusch, (Bruno Walter), (Karl Bohm), et al.
Furtwängler was a nazi puppet and Knappertsbusch a toady. Do
I dispose of their recordings just as I have set aside my books about
anti-Semite philosopher Heidegger?
That aside, what stood out while watching the films of their
performances were the vacuous eyes and faces of the German audience members; not
the German military people or grandees like Goebbels who were animated by the music of
Wagner.
But the people….dead in their souls, and this during the
heyday of Nazism and the war.
And the orchestra players, all performing their hearts out,
with Beethoven’s 9th or a Wagner overture, only to be forgotten by
time and their anonymity.
This is going on in my “office-room” as I scour Facebook’s
noti- fications that tell me I have material from “Friends” there – media people
and UFOers, mostly.
Going through the raft of notes and postings, I’m constantly
stunned by the banality of most input – not from media or UFO notables but
those who are hangers-on or members of the UFO fringe and media junkies (my
primary followers).
There are some grand, good things – past and present – from
the likes of Curt Collins, Erica Lukes, Nick Redfern, Isaac Koi, Malcolm
Robinson, Philip Mantle, Jan Aldrich, Christopher O’Brien, John Greenewald, and a few others.
But the rest is dreck, corny jokes, attention-striven
postings, personal drivel, and a lot of irrelevant UFO or media-related posturings.
And I see the faces attending some of this stuff, I harken
back to my feelings about the orchestra performers who only remain a memory for
those seeing them playing their instruments for zombie-like audience members
and the Nazi hierarchs whose vibrant responses to the music belies their
atrocious evil(s).
The UFOers and media lackeys I’m attuned to are not in that
foul league, but are belittled by their lack of significance, forcing inane
postings on their Facebook friends and those of us snookered into being
subjected to their trivial pursuits by some kind of association, whether
inadvertent or fostered by our association with the topics they flout as their primary
interests at the social media site.
It’s saddening to see the waste of time and effort by
persons who can and should be establishing something more than a hearty
laugh for UFO hobbyists or vapid
comment about or for news-makers.
(And I can see – yes! – those who will pass, sooner than
later from this vale of tears, especially among the UFO crowd. For some reason
they radiate an aura of death or finality, and I see nothing of a legacy for
them – just vaporous detritus that indicates they passed by, leaving not a wisp
of anything worthwhile or stunning: ghosts without notice.)
At least the German music-makes have a residue of
remembrance via those films of their activity.
The UFO Facebookers won’t even have that, when Facebook goes
under, taking with it the dregs of pernicious effluvia that its mem- bers have
thrust upon the world.
