History Channel’s Project Blue Book: Entertainment or Outrage?

My pal Kevin Randle has a piece at his blog [kevinrandle.blogspot.com] in which he confronts the UFO community brouhaha about the entertaining (for some) History Channel’s Project Blue Book.

Kevin thinks that some of us “outraged” by the liberties taken with much of the facts of iconic UFO events are making too much of the dramatic license the program has stretched to the breaking point.

And while he has some caveats about the show, he’s opted to be entertained by it.

His piece also has a nice response from J. Allen Hynek’s son Paul, who is one of the Hynek family members acting as a consultant for the series.

(I’ve noted that the Hyneks probably like the series as it makes Allen Hynek heroic.)

But let me quibble with Kevin about the entertainment value…

Don’t we humans have an overwhelming amount of entertainment venues, devices, TV, shows, sports, novels, movies, recreational areas, amusement parks, friend gatherings, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera?

Do we UFO enthusiasts need our long-time topic of interest (UFOs) to be in that category also?

Can’t we have just one TV show that doesn’t make a mockery of the panoply we know as ufology or the UFO phenomenon?

The History Channel, Destination America, and several other TV operations have already deluged us (UFO buffs) with Hangar One, the Ancient Alien nonsense, and other UFO “documentaries” that have besmirched, besmudged, and denigrated the UFO topic with ham-fisted distortions of activity that deserves a fair and sensible rendering, at least once.

That UFO folks, even those as respected as Kevin, allow the current travesty (Project Blue Book) to air without complaint is a sore spot with those of us who just want a fair hearing and offering about a phenomenon that is already so muddled by half-ass “researchers” and “investigators” (along with the news media) that UFOs can’t be mentioned in polite company.

And now, the foolishness of Project Blue Book, scorned by my crowd pretty much but relished by Kevin’s and a few others.

Enough already…

Nick sees the program as most UFO notables see it: a pastiche of errant information and disgraceful depictions of people involved in the UFO events "dramatically" presented.

I see the ufological masses -- the unclean -- lauding the show as entertainment, and not upset or caring that facts are subverted and both shows so far -- with the 3rd one about The Lubbock Lights up next -- full of ridiculous asides.

The UFO regulars don't care how much the phenomenon and its iconic sightings/reports are distorted goes to the heart of my constant derogations about the idiocy of most UFO buffs.
