The 1950 Movie Rocketship X-M resonated with me then and still resonates with me now.

The sci-fi story – a trip to the Moon goes awry and the “astronauts” end up on Mars.
And while there, the space travelers discover inhabitants who’ve descended from an advanced state to a primitive existence, ostensibly because of a catastrophic war.
This scenario continues to haunt me, causing speculation that during the 4.6 billion year existence of Mars, perhaps a civilization arose, from which the descendants, some of them, escaped to settle on other planets, Earth being one.
Since life forms arose here millions of years ago and mankind within a 100,000 year span, arriving at its current state a little over 10,000 years ago, with our space traveling abilities occurring only recently – in the past 50 years or so – one can reasonably think, I believe, that a space able species could have easily evolved on Mars and began space travel that would be more reasonable than an extraterrestrial race showing up here from planets thousands of light-years away, in the galaxy or cosmos.
4.6 billions years is a long enough time for a species to arise and thrive, and Mars, since it was amenable to life, may well have been the abode of a sentient race that saved itself by coming here (or going elsewhere). That no trace of that Martian race has been found, as far as we know, is not a block to this scenario,
A race that destroyed itself by annihilation of some kind, a billion years ago would not have any trace of its accomplishments or societies (if any) left for us to find.
A billion years – or several billion years – is a long enough time for a great civilization to arise and then disappear; examples of such showed up on Earth within much smaller time spans – only hundreds of years – such as the MesoAmerican civilizations (Olmec, Mayan, Incan, et cetera) along with others: the Sumerians, Egyptians, Greeks, and so on.
I think we may be Martians.
