It’s time to eliminate the term “ufology”

Like a lot of past “ologies” – astrology, graphology, demonology, et al. – ufology has served its purpose, as the identifier of an interest, by dolts, in UFOs.

It’s time to deep six the sobriquet.

And, while I’m no fan of Facebook, I do applaud its requirement that persons using the “service” do so with their real names.

That is what should happen in the UFO community: persons writing about UFOs or comments about them at UFO sites should be using there real names, not the often hokey or pretend avataristic appendages they think gives them cachet as thinkers or power brokers.

You can find a surfeit of stupid nom de plumes in the comments section of Kevin Randle’s erudite blog and at other UFO venues, with a few showing up here.

I plan on not placing comments online by persons using crypt de guerre titles, although I get so few comments that it doesn’t really count for much.

But if the rest of the UFO society chooses to go for transparency or authenticity, we might bring UFOs to a kind of respectability, as Tom DeLonge has, to come extent.

And those trying to replace the phenomenon’s meme, UFOS with UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) should give up that ghost. It ain’t gonna happen.

UFO is the trope for odd things spotted in the sky (and sometimes on the ground).

I don’t give a good goddam what the rest of the UFO crowd does. It’s a loony lot pretty much, but I am hopeful that one day, sooner than later, persons interested in the enigmatic things come to their senses and begin giving the phenomenon the seriousness it should have,
