Hypnosis, the Cash-Landrum episode, and discernment

Curt Collins got an update (comment), about the 1980 Cash-Landrum incident, at the UFO UpDates page he’s working on Facebook.

The comment, which has drawn a few replies, dealt with details brought forth under hypnosis by the witness(es): smells from and lighting on the UFO that assaulted them.

(One smell noted was lighter fluid-like and the lights seen, blue and flickering, I think.)

Hypnosis became unused by my group – psychoanalysts – because it brought forth an admixture of fact and fancy – memories that were corrupted by various input that was often juxtaposed within actual memories, making the information rendered virtually useless as a residue of truth.

In the Cash-Landrum incident, I imagine that a truly discerning investigator could determine if the smell and lights recalled were from the incident, more so than corrupting input from some earlier experience.

The same could be said of all hypnotic efforts. But the key is dis- cernment. The problem in ufology and UFO investigations has been amateurs using hypnosis to try and get at truths but interjecting their own thoughts and biases, inadvertently, into their sessions.

(Like by crabbing about the internet and YouTube, that upsets DrDee, it’s a matter of discernment in determining what is golden and what is dross. Few can do it.)
