Film-maker and polymath Werner Herzog, in a 8/28/23
New
Yorker piece writes:
“
There is such a thing as academic intelligence, and I
didn’t have it. Intelligence is always a bundle of qualities: logical thought,
articulacy, originality, memory, sensitivity, speed of association, and so on.”
[Page 22]
(Exactly my thought and position.)
The academic qualities noted by Herzog make up the cocoon
that most academics wrap themselves in and that’s a nice, sensible cocoon.
It’s when those inside it try to bring it to the masses, as
the Sentes/Cifone duo try to do with the UFO community. That’s a vanity and
show-off state that most see through.
It goes to the trouble with UFO intelligence.
In college I wrote a few papers on Handwriting Analysis,
mostly as a gateway to B.F. Skinner’s characters in his
Walden Two fiction.
I used a book by M.N. Bunker [sic] who called his handwriting thesis
Graphoanalysis while others proclaiming the idea called
their process
Graphology.
This allows considering the study of UFOs, not as
Ufology
but
Ufoanalyis, giving it the kind of status that Freud brought to his
procedures, not as Psychology but
Psychoanalysis and Jung using his procedure
as
Analytical Psychology.
Such a change might give UFO study a cachet that the great
unwashed may be able to use to appear erudite.
Meanwhile the study of UFOs is marred by the primitive
mentality of all those advocating their interest in the phenomenon.
The Sentes/Cifone attempts to claim academic status for UFO
inquiry might take note of Avi Loeb’s posture: a down-to-earth approach to UFO
investigation without the overlay of academic pomposity and foolishness.
The academic slant toward UFOs and now UAP (akin to a title
for mail/package carrier, UPS) is not needed or wanted.
Yes, the common folk intrusion on the phenomenon is
detrimental to any intelligent attempt to get at the UFO meaning, but it’s a
little better than trying to encase the phenomenon within the cascade of
academic foolishness that has engulfed almost every aspect of societal
experience and culture, demeaning fine things with puffery of a vainglorious
kind, killing and stifling everything academia touches.
Herzog moved to a different drumbeat. And that’s what I’m
proposing here…
