I seem to have struck a nerve…

... with my LSD/UFO posting (noted by The Anomalist’s Bill Murphy).

Christopher O’Brien asked me, in a comment (which I haven’t put online, yet), “how many times I’ve tripped out and which substances did I use.”

Unknown assured me that a priest would not be able to help with a spiritual experience, since he never had one. And furthermore, “alcohol/caffeine/nicotine enthusiasts” have made a mess of things.

For Christopher, I assure him that I’ve never smoked a joint or even held one in my hand or ever tried LSD or any other hallucinogen/psychedelic.

When I was in the Detroit music scene, and did a renegade version of HAIR, the musical, the Detroit FREE PRESS (the other paper in town – I had worked for the Detroit NEWS) called me “the Howard Hughes of Hippiedom” because of my association with the play.

Earlier, when I sat in on meetings with John Sinclair (a friend), who managed the outré rock group, The MC-5 (“Kick out the jams, motherfuckers” their mantra song), marijuana was passed around.

Sitting there, dressed in my London imported suits, declining to participate in the cannabis-enjoyed indulgence, the “musicians” thought I might be a narc. John assured them I wasn’t.

Working as a psychologist for Detroit banks and businesses, it was my job to ferret out persons with problems that might impact those enterprises, and drugs were anathema surely.

But alcohol was imbibed readily, often to detrimental occasions, as Unknown, indicates and there was little to determine if a possible hire had a drinking problem, just as it was difficult to tell who was a marijuana or LSD user.

But, observing then, and now, behavior by persons using such “helpers” to get through life, in the UFO community too, one sees how mental activity becomes riotous or deficient by drugs, even those as soporific as marijuana.

(Of course alcoholism is notorious for bad behavior, and my grandfather, who was a bootlegger in Detroit in the 1920s/30s, as the newspapers noted, was a contributor to that “vice” I suppose.)

So, I loathe drug use, even when it is used “experimentally” for short periods of time, and the recent data that LSD may cause cancerous malignancies makes me even more diligent in my excoriation of such use.

Studies of marijuana for pain and suffering are promising but those using cannabis for recreational use are to be vilified, as adding marijuana to alcohol abuse merely exacerbates societal problems.

As for ufologists and buffs using drugs (marijuana , LSD, mushrooms, et al.), that may explain much about why the UFO phenomenon is so riddled by loonyness.

So, Christopher and Unknown, there you have it. Enjoy your “bliss” but know that I, for one, think your UFO musings are suspect thereby.
