Being and Nothingness: A non-Sartrean observation

Those who subscribe to The New Yorker magazine have got to notice that it is resolute in resurrecting the near-famous or recently dead cultural notables.
 
But, as with zombie literature, the rise is not Christ-like – spectacular and forever. The rep-emergent “celebs” of the past, recent and older, are given their due and saluted once more before they re-descend to faded memory or total oblivion.
 
This is the way of human existence: no matter how great or slight one person was, they’ll end up forgotten, eventually by everyone (family too) and certainly by the public and/or humanity itself, no matter how great a legacy they may have left behind,
 
Advertisers touting vacations, homes, activities of all kinds are certain to stress the idea that indulging will provide memories for the ages, even though we all know the flaws of memory and the fading quality of memory even after a few minutes.
 
Nothing lasts forever, that old maxim goes, and it’s a truism that actually registers for the astute.
 
In the UFO world, for which I’m writing this, nothing is forever or even a lengthy temporality.
 
You can, like me, name a number of one-time UFO notables who are nowhere to be found in current UFO discussions or writings.
 
And many on the current UFO scene, mouthing all over the place (via podcasts and TV   broadcasts) are little heard or connecting but to a few, who forget them the moment the sound disappears.
 
We all have UFO books piled high to the ceiling, unread or once read and now forgotten, certain to be totally forgotten in a few short years, just as some of the great works of literature lie dormant in libraries around the world.
 
The fact of the matter, the reality, is that life and effort, in no small measure – whether a sport achievement, a profound artistic/cultural feat, a scientific breakthrough, an altruistic gesture that saves one or a thousand – will go by the way of a dark lacuna of memory and loss.
 
So, to think what you acquire in life (or in the meager world of UFOs) has meaning, it doesn’t.
 
Musing on the message will confirm that we live to die, and to be forgotten, even the once-lauded among us.
