The 1961 Betty (and Barney) Hill Saga

While reading (again) about the alleged 1961 UFO abduction
of Betty and Barney Hill in Albert Rosales’ superb book series Humanoid
Encounters: The Others Amongst Us, 1960-1964, page 79 ff., I was struck by
the authenticity of Betty Hill’s dream recollections and memory recall under
hypnosis.
There has always been an inkling of the real about Betty
Hill’s account of her and Barney’s purported ordeal, however…
I liked seeing Betty Hill discussing her kidnapping by ETs;
that lady was gran’ma-like in her presentations.
But a few things always disturbed me: her initial
description of the supposed aliens with big noses, changed to non-noses in
later recountings, the starmap, and the book she almost absconded with.
The nose thing has never been explained sensibly as far as I
know and her recall of the starmap has been addressed amply by me and Jose
Caravaca over the years.
But the book?
Since books are an evolutionary human artifact, deriving
from materials indigenous to this Earth (clay tablets to scrolls and papyri,
cotton, rags, et cetera) to the form we know today, how is it that an
alien species would have a “book”?
And since we often now read from e-books via tablets,
Kindles, and other technological devices, wouldn’t it seem likely that an
advanced extraterrestrial species would have something in their arsenal like
that, rather than a “book”?
It’s one of those erratic details which derails stories such
as that offered by the likeable and seeming sincere Betty Hill.
